Todd takes Strattera and Metadate. I was gonna take him off the Straterra and try to some alternatives for the Metadate as well, but... I don't know. If he didn't have Tic's I don't think any of this would bother me ( him being medicated ).
But, anyway. Concerta is NOT the last drug of choice. Really, if that much Ritalin doesn't help, then something else is wrong entirely.
MY son doesn't have sleep problems or rebound with stims; neither do I. FYI and best wishes! My daughter (9) is an ADHD magnet. Her three closest friends have ADHD and are doing well on meds. If their parents hadn't told me the dx., and that they struggle to help their kids in school, I would never have guessed.THey tend to be vivacious, talkative kids who can be bossy, but are appropriate in almost every way (I didn't know them before the meds). ADHD should not cause such "out there" behavior that people stand and point. If that happens, likely it's a misdiagnosis. ADHD kids tend to be sensitive, easily frustrated, have poor self esteem and struggle in school, but if they are so out of control that they throw themselves on the ground in public and have an all out rage with disregard of who is watching--hate to sound like a broken record, but I'm usually right when the child is re-evaluted--you either have high functioning autism or early onset bipolar. THe kids my daughter knows are all on Straterra. Their parents all swear by the difference in their child's ability to learn in school. I've been there/done there way too many years not to know the various disorders that my son was misdiagnosed with. I do know that ADHD kids can live great lives--seen that. Many, if not most, do need some sort of meds and school help. You can get that help even in college. OlderMom38795.2593634259
We tried five different meds before we found one that worked for my twelve-year-old ADD/dyslexic son, but the one that he is on, Tenex, has worked absolute wonders for him. Recently, a new psychiatrist took him off it to try another med, and within a week-and-a-half, I thought I was going to hari kari (sp)
. He's now back on Tenex, and we are all happy
. When you find the right med, it makes all the difference in the world. Finding the right med is the problem, though. It can take a long time, for it took over a year with my son.
Hi oldermom and lillian,
My 15yr old takes concerta at the highest dose, this is his second drug to try. The doctor told us this was the last drug to try!!!!!!! Do you know if you can get straterra and tenex in the UK, i've never heard of these.
Any info you can provide will give some ammo when he's at the doctors again. I gutted that this is the so called last drug.
pullingouthair38795.3110300926DO YOU THINK IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A CHILD ON APPROPRIATE MEDICATION TO FUNCTION LIKE A NORMAL CHILD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF NORMAL AGE APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR?
Hi Nicks mom, after reading different threads on this site and others, i think it is possible for a child to 'function properly' as you put. Many go on to lead normal lives even though they still have problems . But as with my 15yr old who was comfirmed with adhd last may i have yet see this happen, maybe we haven't find the right meds for him yet. I think i've just got to hope he learns to live with it and gain control of himself to enable him to succeed in life and be happy.Yes, my son does. Of course you must define Normal. Blending in with everyone else is the best and really... I do alot of chaperoning trips with my sons' class and after spending days with the boys.... I determined that other than focus and impulsivity....my son was no different then the rest of the maniacs. :) I totally agree , they all seem like devils at some point
Is your son on meds? which ones? Is he coping with the school enviroment ? My son's been out since september this year.Yes, I think they can behave like typical children....I just told a neighbor that my son was ADHD and took meds...she had nooooooo idea , just looked and acted like any other kid ( perhaps a bit more talkative and NOT shy...but that is what people like about him...they say he is personable). My daughter is on meds and to be honest I do not notice a whole lot of difference but her teacher swears she does. I may just be used to my girl.
Pulling, Straterra probably has a different name in the UK. You may try googling Straterra to see if you can find out the actual ingrediant in it and bring it to the attention of your doctor. My freinds swear by it. They like it better than stims because there isn't that rebound effect nor do their kids experience sleep problems.
