My son has been on medications since he was 2 years old. We had the same problem. He would not swallow the pill we would sprinkle the medication on applesauce pudding you name it. We have found an apothecary and they turn his medication into liquid form.
thankyou to all who have posted , unfortunatly we live in scotland and under brittish law most of the above mentioned are not available here . it is so maddening for me and my family that all the specialists cant help him , i`ll keep on hoping for my son and i will keep up the fight for him , once again thanks allHi, I wanted to share with you a product that is liquid form, in fact it is a powder formula all natural that you mix into a shake and the kids drink it twice a day. My son who is 8yrs old is taking it and I plan to be able to take him off his meds eventually. There are so many stories to share from around the world of the kids being able to go off their meds thanks to this. I posted a topic about my story but somehow it is under the Adult ADD message board topics(I'm new to this, so I must have did it wrong) it is "hope in a can" if you want to read it, I just wanted to share my story with everyone about it , I am not trying to sell anything to anyone on this site just want to see happy & healthy kids without them having to be on all the meds and just there to share my stor, and the many more out there if anyone needs to hear more.
Hope I helped,
relivmom

I just found this Message Board and see it is rather old, but I have the answer to the top question by scotscute1.
There is a GREAT way to make any of the ADD or ADHD drugs into liquid so that any child can take them without loss of efficacy or without tasting so terrible your child can't swallow them.
I found out the hard way Sammy was on Ritalin when he was seven. It helped incredibly with his focus on bookwork and testing and grades. He went from a c student to straight A's. The only problem was getting him to swallow a tablet. He couldn't do it at that young age. We tried grinding it up and mixing it with all kinds of foods and drink. Which I later found out is quite dangerous. We don't realize that the cornocopia of what we are mixing the medication with can effect the efficacy of the medication incredibly. It can totally inactivate the chemical compound or make it less potent or more potent. Well even without this he could taste whatever we put it in and would stop eating each thing we gave him that had his Ritalin in it. It got so bad he almost refused to eat anything because he was affraid that we would be trying to hide the medicine in it.
I happened to be in my local CVS pharmacy and saw signs and posters up for a new service they were carrying called FLAVORx. It asked "What is your child's favorite flavor"? So I asked the pharmacist what this meant and he told me that they can make any medicine in any flavor that your child likes. I researched it, talked to my doctor about it, and talked with my husband about whether to give this FLAVORx a try.
Since everything said that it was 100% safe I decided it couldn't go much worse then it currently was so I asked my CVS pharmacist to make the tablets into a suspension and have it flavored Bubblegum his favorite flavor.
I got it home and told Sammy that we got some NEW medicine especially made up for him in his favorite flavor Bubblegum. He cautiously tried it and we all held our breaths and awaited his verdict "Not Bad".
Phew, what a relief finally no more trickery or feelings of being a bad mother forcing her child to take something he really didn't like.
Since then (and that was three years ago) he has focused in school and his grades have been great and he has been put in all AP classes and also has a great social life and there is no more struggling with trying to get him to take his Ritalin when he needs it.
This stuff is great. I know it is available at Walgreens and now I even saw it at Wal-Mart, so I think it is available virtually everywhere.
Give it a try, I bet it will work wonders for you.
I did some extra reseaerch and talked to some other Mom's that have used FLAVORx for Ritalin and other ADD or ADHD drugs and found that this is the safest best way to get your kids to take these much needed medications. The efficacy of the medication remains the same while making a liquid that tastes good but retains all of the integrity of the medication to start in tablets or capsule form. I spoke with my doctor, Doctor Pillsburg who said that he recommends it all the time and that he has seen the reps from the company and researched it himself to make sure that this procedure is safe, and it is. It has been used on over 60 million prescriptions without ever having an incidence of a medication not working or an adverse reaction due to a FLAVORx flavoring.
I feel confident that this is the way to go, no more worrying about choking on a pill or chewing a tablet that was meant to be swallowed or mixing it in with a food and hoping to God that your child doesn't realize that the medication is in there. By the way they can always tell; it is a losing battle. Here's to all of us who have fought this never ending battle sometimes to the outcome of tears.
Let me know if you all try this way of getting the medication down. It is a little easier and definitely kinder to a child that does not understand why he/she is taking a medication in the first place.
I doublechecked the website and it says that FLAVORx is available in over 37,000 pharmacies across the country so most likely their is one near you. I called and they told me every Target, Wal*Mart, Wallgreen, CVS, Rite Aid, K-Mart and just about every other chain store carries it and a good many independents. If your pharmacy does not, tell them to call the company and get this product. It could be a real lifesaver to some...
neat, I did not know you can turn pills into liquid.DAD TAUGHT OUR SON HOW TO SWALLOW. THEY ARE FEARING OF CHOKEING IS WHAT CAUSES THEM TO FEAR THIS WAY. SMASH THEM PILLS IS WHAT THE NURSING HOMES DO AND GIVE IT IN A SPOON FOR THE ELDERLY FOKES. jUST 2 IDEAS HOPE HELP.
MY OLD DR.SAID WE CAN FLAVOR IT IF NECESSARY EVEN WITH ANTIBIOTICS. i WOULD DO THIS JUST WHEN NECESSARY.
VITAMINS EVEN COME LIQUID ALSO.
oldtimer38836.235787037We used to for the ritalin open up the capsule and put it in pudding or applesauce. We no longer have to do that for she has learned to swallow pills and is proud of it. She was taught to take a sip of water and put the pill in and swallow with the head tilted back. She is now on concerta. My daughter hated chew tabs or liquid and would fight us tooth and nail and we had to force her to take meds now since she learned to swallow she prefers it. I am proud of my 6 year old.ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE USING THIS COMBO?

My 7yr old son had the same problem w/swallowing pills. He was able to do it for a few months, than that was it. I had an old fashion pharmacy "compound" Strattera into a liquid form. It was worked wonderfully. While any flavor of it is bitter, he is still able to get it down. We usually allow a spoon of ice cream to follow the meds just to kill the taste. I had to make ALOT of calls to get this done, but it worked for us and that was 2 years ago. Good Luck
