I apologize for this because I do not have any advice or an answer to your post, but I am very curious and have a question for you. How is your son taking ADHD meds O.K.ed in drug tests performed on athletes? I ask this because my son really wants to get into track, and my husband and I were wondering if ADHD meds are excused in the drug tests?
so far there aren't any drug test required in us swimming. his concerta doesn't give him any physical boost or edge. his coach does notice he's more focused during practice - better ability to carry out directions during his technical training. drug approval in athletes is something i've been wondering myself if he progresses to the college level & beyond. when i find out more i'll be sure to post. thanks!here's a site i just found: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/indepth/drugs/glossary/dictionary.h tml
it's something i'll be bringing up with his coaches for the future. they're aware of his medication but never mentioned a concern we should have as he gets older. hope this helps.
swimmers_mom38803.4310648148Hello, I'm looking for advice from other parents of competitive athletes whose child is taking medication for AD/ADHD. My son is somewhat maintaining his weight. He'll lose a pound or two after competiting in a 2/3 day event. It's a struggle for him to get those pounds back. My question is what foods do you feed your child before & after practices or competitions? And what about during the competitions? We try to feed him high carbs before & protein/carb bars during. It's a struggle though. My concern is what the Concerta is doing do his body since he's a competitive swimmer. It's so important for him to maintain healthy muscles & high energy. Any other parents dealing with the same concerns? Many thanks for all advice received.
