antacids make addrall more effective? | ADHD Information

Share
i downloaded prescribing info from the adderall xr website and it mentioned how antacids will increase absorbtion of adderall in the bloodstream has anyone tried to take Tums or Rolaids with adderall to see if it makes it stronger? it mentioned that antacids should be avoided.you seem knowledgeable on  the subject of adderall, have you been taking it for a long time?  i've often wondered about the long term efffects of adderall. have you felt any bad side effects from long term use?

Well my meds are dexedrine which are very similar but not exactly adderall.

I've taken dexedrine now since november of 2005.  I've only had to up the dosage once - from 10mg twice/day to 20mg twice/day.

Side effects that last are cramps sometimes, occasional sleeplessness, loss of water due to peeing more (just drink more water), and more grinding of my teeth.

The side effects are manageable.  I take dicetel for cramps, manage my sleep tightly (go to bed earlier for sure), drink tons of water, and I have a mouth guard made by my dentist that saves my teeth/jaw.

The bad stuff generally is gone in about 3 months on most meds.  If not I'd say the med is reacting badly or you're taking too much or not regularly enough to become accustomed.  Daily doses at the same time help you know.

absolutely - do NOT play with antacids and your meds!! It can be unpredictable as it can alter absorption of your meds to a DANGEROUS level!

No citrus fruit/drink or acidic drink, no antacids during the initial digestion of the meds!! EVER!!

Please - it's no game and can actually kill you.  Believe me it's not worth the trial and error with your life.

If the meds aren't working ask your doc, or try a med holiday to up the usefulness (and it's cheap and relatively easy - and safe!)

Don't be reckless - please.

While we're on the subject of taking other stuff along with the ADHD meds, I had a strange reaction from taking Codrals for a cold.

I felt short of breathe and got the shakes quite badly. I've never had any problems with Codrals before only this last time. The only thing different is my dexamphetamines for my ADHD?

Anyone know anything about this?

Generally Magnesium and Aluminum antacids are the ones that tend to have drug interactions - not the calcium one - i.e. -- Tums.  I'm not sure whether this is true with Adderall or not.  Much of the literature involving drug interactions with antacids refers to the former.

I read that also about the antacids.  Once I started on Adderal XR I stopped drinking OJ in the morning (miss it) stopped taking Vitamin C and stopped eating oranges. ( i miss it all though) I've only taken TUMS a handfull of times since on Addy in the past year and a half. And only if my indigestion is unbearable. But if i do it's before bed. When most everything has depleted from my system.

I don't like taking meds as it is, so I'd rather not mess myself up. :)
