parents dont understand

I was recently diagnosed with inattentive ADHD, and I just started taking
meds for it. There were two homeworks from 2 different classes that I didn't
do because I didn't know about it, and those are the 2 that never post the
homework on the online progress book thing that I usually check because
it's hard for me to remember or keep track. My dad saw the missing
assignments online and he called me "f**king stupid", and says that I just
don't care and the inattentive is just an excuse and I should stop making
excuses and "buckle down".

What should i do?? I try really hard to get my work done but when I dont
know about stuff there isnt anything i can do and i tell him this but he
doesnt listen. the last few days I skipped lunch to do my homework in study
hall because I forgot and i try really hard to do good. commonsense38805.7173611111.IMac38947.7760185185

I just turned 17 and its only now that my parents were finally convinced (by my school) that i needed to see an educational psychologist to see what was "wrong with me" I made an evaluation but its stll in the process basiclly meaning they just wanna make ure i dont get misdiagnosed. So i know how u feel....I tried tlking to my parents and it took them 2 years to be coninced that i am trying m best but a part of them still believe m careless and forgetful sometimes but its normal. A lot of parents here told me that its just normal coz the want the best for me and it sounds easy for them to say "y the hell dont u remember?"

Just talk to ur dad and ask him not to be too hard on u. It will take a long time especially that your in the most important years of school right now so be patient (i know its hard) and dont let him put too much pressure or make you feel like a loser coz thats how its been for me for that past 6-7 years!

Your dad is right. You are just using ADD as an excuse for being lazy.
Your dad is right. You are just using ADD as an
excuse for being lazy.
STOP IT! I can't ignore you any longer! You are being very offensive!WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET SOMEONE KICKED OFF OF THIS SITE????? ADDIZFAKE IS VERY OFFENSIVE AND OBVIOUSLY IGNORANT AS WELL. MANY HAVE TRIED TO INFORM THIS &*%$!!!!! STILL HE PERSISTS...PLEASE RID US OF HIM???Press the Report button at the top right hand of one of his posts. I just did with one (the Would you medicate for cancer if they didn't have it?) but the more reports the more likely he'll be kicked offI just read a bunch of his posts and.... I reported him about ten times. There's a forum moderator that's aware of him. I'm going to send her a PM to let her know he's doing it on posts over the entire site.I also have inattentive ADHD.  If you don't already have one, a planner might help you to not forget about assignments (I know that if I don't write my homework down, I usually don't remeber to do it.)  It sounds like you do the assignments as long as you know about it, and not the fact that you know about the assignment and just neglect to do it.  It appears as though your dad has no concept for what you and the rest of the inattentive ADHD world go through to get tasks finished.  As for the two missing assignments, I would turn them in if you still can.  I don't know if this would help, but to show your dad that you know about all your assignments, write them down in a planner, assignment book, or notebook of some kind, and have your teacher innitial to show that you know of everything.  Hope this helps. Why doesn't the admin delete it? it would keep from anyone pulling it back up again.sweet_n_silly2638987.4429050926ok, i will indulge you all.  if you click on the profile, you will all see the last log in date was on September 8th.  Every time you post you are bumping the thread up.  I suggest letting the thread die.  The little kid is gone. ogram38985.8648726852All kids are getting screwed cause they are being taught to test not taught to learn. Se kids are suffering alot more. Many parents are upset with how public education is these days. The ones I have spoken with that is. If they all were taught to master the stuff then they could past the tests. My concern are those with serious Ld's who are not improveing in Reading/language which is the bases for it all. We always here it the parent's who make the difference. Both our kids have had the same starting out. It's not a parent's job to give the education it's the school job. Our job is to give them life skills training. If traditional methods are not working out schools should get the money for the otherstuff. Not parents problem if they claim don't have the monies to us just a copput. Wright's law says it's their job to get the programs our kids need. They can get them with a GOVT. grant. It also says this better than retaining kids.Different curriculum. My thing with school staff is they only help with what they see which most cases is way different from what we see at home. Not uncommon. Call Path if you have question this is our SE support members. Call DE if your unhappy also. Next thing I will do.     get ur mum and dad to come and read the stories on this forum i undastnd my bf so much more now i hav been on hear and i undersntd more haw hard it is for him so i get less stressed/anoyed with him if hes mind wanders or he forgets or he gets bored quickly because all these ADHD/ADDers on hear have made me realalise how hard things can be!Look, someimes i feel like parents just don't understand too. I mean they don't try to live with it but they try to help use out with it. Talk to a doctor and they can help yo angd give you adive of what to do for school. i have one and it helps I shove a notebook in my front pocket and write down everything on the
spot.

My mum and sister used to do that to and it used to really get to me
because I just couldn't remember and the harder I tried to be attentive the
more I'd tune out and the more distressing it would be.

Try explaining that its chemical not choice. All the advertising for those
behavioral modification programs have given ADHD sufferers a hard time
because it makes it seem like a choice/fault/laziness.

A couple of months ago i forgot to take my medication before school and
after my art theory class I had forgotten everything so I asked my teacher
after class what had been the general gist of the class and he started
screaming at me even once i had explained about ADD he still pinned it
as my fault. I dropped art. B*stard

ADHD is a chemical imbalance in the brain, it is proven that people with ADHD has unbalenced amounts of norepinephrine, sertionin, and low levels of dopamine. Also the paths that these chemicals travel on, is different in ADHD patients.

This imblance can negativly effect the overall function of a person. Un-treated ADHD can lead to many negitve things in life, and put you at risk for substance abuse, depression, metal disorders, and wrekless behavior.

There are risks of using medication, but for most people they benifit from it. Some people dont tolerate it, some people do.

It is importent to consider the pros, and cons of medications.

my parents took me to a pideatrican 3 times. I was diagnosed with combined ADHD (innatention, hyperactivity) with some syptoms of ODD.

My last session with the doctor, he told my dad that it would be best to start trying some medications. My dad said "I want him to be checked by a few more doctors and see what they say" I havent seen anymore doctors, or gone back to this one.

I am taking it upon myself to miss school bus to the clinic with my friend, get my medication, pay for it myslef. And then explain what i am doing with a bottle of pills.  I am not going to suffer just because my parents dont agree with medicating, it will hurt ME and only ME in the long run.

did u try to open up completely to your parents? tell them exactly what u go through. they can not understand how u feel. there is no way for them to. only u know what it is like. they are ignorant, not neglectful. maybe u could bring up a few descriptive sites re: adhd many of them explain the consequences of ignoring this condition and not treating it. good luck sweetheart. the doctor can not treat u without their consent. Thanks Ogram and sorry we used your topic for all this Commonsense!yeah I have a planner and I usually write it down,

but some teachers who dont give homework often dont make it very clear or
dont say anything and i never know about it until he says its due.. and then
im screwed.

what makes this worse is that my science teacher does this and he makes
homeworks like 80 points each and i didnt do them so i have a 6% in his
class all because of that.

i really wnat to know what I should do concerning my dad, is there anything
i can say to him or something?.IMac38947.7762847222i don't think my dad has adhd but i never really thought about it

hes the kind of person who just doesnt like to believe in 'mental' disorders
and thinks anyone can just snap out of it and act normal. it's agitating
because he gets really mad and swears and does some crazy things when i
slip up, i try to explain to him but there is no talking to him

then if i do something wrong or keep arguing with him about it trying to
explain he says things like "there is soemthing wrong with you" "there is just
somethin wrong in your head.." rolls his eyes, sighs, and walks away

it makes me pretty depressed a lot of the times too bcz i cant do anything

It's all in your head... That is one of the most uninformed and idiotic phrase that someone can say.

But, even so, when you think about it, ADHD is all in the head. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain, after all. Still, that's not the way most people use that statement.

Mostly, they're trying to say that you're just doing it to aggravate them or get attention.

However, even if that was the only reason you were doing it, why exactly would you need to seek attention in the first place? Even that would indicate an underlying problem, wouldn't it?

Yeah, if somebody tries to say that to me, my respect for them has dropped substantially for the next few minutes or so. After that, I can't remember it anyway.

there is a lot of good research on what is ACTUALLY going on inside your head...you can look up some stuff about what chemicals your brain isn't producing, why, and even pictures of brainscans comparing people with ADHD to people without ADHD trying to work on the same task, there is some pretty concrete stuff out there if you look hard enough, and your dad sounds similar to my dad in the "unable to hold a conversation without getting a temper" department, my dad's a little more calm, but i know how you feel.

if you find some of the info you want him to know, print it out and put it somewhere where he will find it and have some time to look at it, maybe write a note explaining yourself, that's proven to be easier for me than actually trying to talk in person.  I put notes in the microwave for my dad when i need to tell him something i can't just talk to him about, sounds dumb, but it's worked...

and I have had friends throughout highschool that know I need some help staying on track, and I would do they same thing as you and not think I have homework, so I don't worry about it, and then get a 0 on it...but then i got in the habit of calling my friends to ask them, even if I don't think we have homework, and if you have the right friends, they won't mind helping you out.  last thing...don't try to do it on your own, I know being a teenager, sometimes we think we can do anything, but having someone else there for you is really really helpful.

good luck!

my dd has the same problems with her hw and  I thought I might pass along some tips.   Try talking to some of your teachers about your problem.  You don't have to go into too much detail.  Just let them know that you're having some problems getting your assigments written down and remembering to turn them in.  Ask if they will e-mail the assignments to you or put the weeks assignments on a sheet for you.  Also ask if you can turn your work in through e-mail.   Some teachers will not understand or help but some will.  I was truly amazed at the number of teachers that were willing to help my daughter without any kind of educational plan in place or even a diagnosis on her records.  Her math teacher writes out the hw assignments for each unit and gives a copy to the whole class.  Her  English started sending e-mails about upcoming assigmentes to ALL the parents after I spoke with her.  She also lets my dd turn in work through e-mails.  My daughter also tries to turn in a hard copy to get in the habit of remembering.

Otherwise, it seems to me that you've gotten some good advice on this board.  Friends can be a big help.   Good luck.  I hope that your father comes to understand what you're going through.

RE: Long-term Ritalin use (poisoning my very own child), Initial diagnosis was ITP, current diagnosis – "deadly aplastic anemia"….ADHD fraud, parents beware! Ritalin is known by other names, methyl, methylin, methylpenidate, concerta, focalin and more!

Hello Everyone, I wish I didn’t have to fancy meeting you all, at least not here.., …not in this forum, but here we are, all together aren’t we? How very, very sad. Well, I’d like to tell my daughter’s story and keep telling it so that other’s who may be in the same horrible boat, can hopefully gleen some wisdom from my experience, and if that helps another child, I will have made our heavenly father smile today, I hope.

My name is anita. We are a family of 5, mom/dad and 3 daughters. We live in Apache Junction, AZ and my children’s ages are currently, 13,17,20. My middle daughter Bree who is now 17, had been on ritalin from age 5-6 to age 15 and was first diagnosed with ITP at age 15, (2-1/2 years ago) thru a routine sports physical when proteins were noted in the urine. From there, several blood tests followed and the platelets were found to be lower than normal, around 80,000 at that time. The oncologist assured me (not) not to worry, and tentatively diagnosed her with ITP, that was when I first found/visited this website. At that time, I quickly learned that ADHD – treatment – methylphenidate was known to cause ITP, and low blood platelets. I went to my DR. with this, but he denied the connection and further patronized me telling me that I could still give my daughter Ritalin if I wanted to. Well, I didn’t believe him and she was removed from the medicine immediately. Eventually the platelets spiraled to the 60’s and the dr. ordered a bone marrow biopsy. In 2004, at that time the bone marrow was found to be manufacturing Platelets and an excessive amount at that, so the assumption was that they were being destroyed somewhere else in the body. This ruled out leukemia and cancer at that time. For 2-1/2 years her platelets remained in the 60-ish range.

Then recently, they have spiraled down to 37.000, and we are now being referred to pediatric/hematology/oncology, who have sent out 10 tubes of blood for testing, and are temporarily telling us that she has aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder involving destruction of the bone marrow, and involves an inability to produce white cells, red cells, and platelets. Our child may be dying! I told the reg. Oncologist that he wasn’t fit to care for my child when with this new news, I learned that ritalin is also responsible for low red and white blood cells too. But guess what? The new pediatric doctors aren’t admitting ritalin is the cause either. NOBODY WANTS TO SAY, YES, IT’S THE RITALIN, BECAUSE THEN THEY MIGHT HAVE TO STAND BY THAT COMMENT/BELIEF IN LITIGATION! And no doctor wants a part of that! Forget that they are moraling and ethically motivated to for the 3 million ritalin users out there nationwide, oh no, cause you see, there’s 3 billion annually in the RX’s pocket – and they are – well connected to the doctor’s pocket!

Well, I have researched aplastic anemia and find that it CAN BE a direct RESULT of BENZENE. And I have now researched the chemistry/compounds in ritalin and find that benzene is an important ingredient of ritalin. All the while NOVARTIS, manuf. Of ritalin is the first to abound with comments about how long ritalin has been around and that ritalin is safe, but the minute someone makes a claim of opposite nature, NOVARTIS is the first to claim, there is no long-term data or studies to know what the effects of ritalin are in children (long-term). Well, I say LIARS! I saw a Physicians REF. DESK encyclopedia today from 1977 that had thrombocytopenia purpura as a serious side effect of the drug, but do you think that information was on the labels of the ritalin medication my daughter was taking in the 80’s-90’s? NO! It was not, and IT CERTAINLY WAS NOT ON THERE, THAT BENZENE IS AN INGREDIENT, NOR IS IT ON THERE THAT THE DRUG COULD CAUSE CANCER, LEUKEMIA, APLASTIC ANEMIA AND PROBABLY OTHER HORRIFYING AND UNTHINKABLE DISEASES. I know, because I still have the receipts!

So back to the moment. I’m furious. I’m angry, and I’m going to be the biggest anti-ritalin parent out here on the net. So, if you are just now being diagnosed with ITP and ritalin is involved in your child’s history? Run, don’t walk to the nearest 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinion you can find if necessary, and start checking the heart, the liver, the spleen, the bone marrow, and more, because I had a lull of 2 years – and perhaps that will have a deadly effect now? Could there have been something we could have been doing for her in the time period? LISTENING TO ONE DOCTOR IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA! Trust me, I have had breast cancer too at age 32, and this is the God’s honest truth….be proactive and do not trust them! Other kids have dropped dead with heart associated causes. Please I ask you one thing. Please tell 3 people about my story, MORE IF POSSIBLE, PLEASE!

Can you even imagine how we are feeling as parents? It is bad enough when your child is sick, but to think you are responsible for the demise of your very own children is hardly bearable! The bible put laws into effect for loss, an eye for an eye, a life for a life. You accidently kill your neighbors donkey, you pay for it, you do it on purpose you pay more. How much more so the life of a human being? Well, I may never see compensation from NOVARTIS for this, but WE can shut them down. One person at a time! If you will please pass my story on to someone/anyone who will listen. It’s very real, and it’s happening to us as I type, and we are real people, with a real child we love dearly, very possibly dying from a very real killer. 3 million kids in America may soon follow if WE don’t SHUT THEM DOWN! Please, Please I beseech you, tell someone, email my story, I don’t care….share it today won’t you? Also, won’t you pray for us? Breanna is scared and mom and dad and sisters are too, sisters may have to test for match – for bone marrow transfusion – and that is a whole other nightmare that I don’t have time to relay.

AND LASTLY PARENTS, THERE ARE OTHER WAYS, THE U.S. IS OVERMEDICATING. ADHD IS NOT A DISEASE FOUND IN LIFE OR IN AUTOPSY, AND YET WE ARE DRUGGING OUR KIDS FOR IT. WE AS A NATION ARE CONTROLLING THEM WITH MEDICATIONS RATHER THAN DISCIPLING THEM AND TEACHING THEM BETTER WAYS OF BEHAVIOR. I BEG/BESEECH YOU, FIND ANOTHER WAY PARENTS, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT USE DRUGS.

I WISH I WOULD OF TAKEN THE STUFF MYSELF TO SEE WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO MY KID....THEN PERHAPS I COULD OF UNDERSTOOD HER COMPLAINTS when she told me long ago, she didn't like it!

Commonsense,

I've skipped ahead a little and haven't read all the posts, but here's my suggestions:

Try talking to your Dad. Tell him you want to sit down and talk (if this is anyway possible, I don't know if he's the kind of man that will listen) or if you have another parent or adult in the house speak to them. Explain that you really try but that you need help. Talk to him or if you have a guidance counsler in school about getting a 504 or IEP for your ADD. It can be written in the 504 (a legal document of accomodations for you) that you either must have a list from the teachers of the homework days prior to the due date (perhaps a list each week) or that they must sign your planner to be sure you have everything written down. Or even if you don't want to go through all that, speak to your teachers directly. Tell them you have trouble remembering or knowing when you have assignments and see if they remind you before you leave the class. 504s (mine at least) don't always work for they aren't enforced, but all schools are different and you have to fight for your right to have equal opportunities, Speak Up, Be Sure Your Voice Is Heard! because this is your life!

Let us know how it's going.

Remember, sweetheart. No one is perfect, not even your parents. They just don't understand. Things can be hard at school, even if you are not ADHD. In some caes, kids get mistreated my teachers more than the bullies. In life everyone does the best that they can. Yes, some people should know better in how they treat others, but that is were the no one is perfect comes in, or they are just plain stupid. LOL  Trying to make you laugh here. I know it's hard on you, but keep doing the best you can. At least you try, while others rather stay the way that they are an . Good luck to you !

I do believe that some people (mean ones) should go to the doctor themselves and be put on anti  pills.

I think schools should change and we can only have this happen if we complain to politicians. I want this to happen for our kids futures.
I never thought those drugs were any good. If my child had ADHD or what have you, I WOULD NOT give any of these drugs to him/her. No one cares if your child dies, or has any problems because of this. All they care about is themselves and how to make money, or for some teachers .. making  it more easy for them if your child sleeps in class, or sits there like a zombie. Yeah, who cares if they learn anything .. just make my life better. Now a days it's all about ME ME ME  and  you. No one cares about helping others and doing what is right, or doing their jobs the way it should be done. I find this to be a  shame.

I BET (IF THE TRUTH IS KNOWN) THERE ARE A LOT OF DOCTORS OUT THERE THAT DON'T GIVE THIS TO THEIR OWN KID WITH ADHD. OH, WHAT PEOPLE WILL DO FOR MONEY.

This is an off subject question, but OldTimer, do you know the... I guess Chain of Command or make up of the Special Education... thing (lol mind not thinking too technical). I'll be going to college in 2007 and if I can go into this field and make some positive changes so other kids like me don't have to go through this sh... crap then I want to look into it. The whole system is messed up. They hire people who don't care or are messed up in the head and screw all the brilliant kids out there... I think I'm gonna start a new topic about this, reply there if you want..IMac38947.7767592593

Dear CommonSense,

I have a son who was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 7. He is 14 now and has had problems with his school work up to 6th grade. My husband would be subjected with my son doming up to him saying I have a test tomorrow on 4 chapters. My husband would go over the entire 4 chapters with him taking a bout 3 hours and be so angry. The summer of 6th grade was the turning point. My husband sat down with him and went over simple ways to avoid these problems in the future. He told him to take notes in class so that when a test comes you will have all of your notes to review. Also, when you write things down I think you remember them again. He told him to write all of his homework down in a book so that at the end of the day he would know what books to take home to do his homework. My son was on all the Ritalin stuff up to 6th grade and we decided to take him off completely and come up with our own concoction.  We have found that children with ADHD, ADD have lack of minerals in their body and with extensive research we have come up with some natural vitamins that have worked. My son had a "C" average up to 6th grade on all the ridalin and other drugs until we put him on these vitamins (with NO ridalin or any other drugs) in 7th and 8th and he was on the honor roll. He was a true success story for the school. They are all liquid because my son cannot take pills. Fish oil (omega3), Body Balance (high anti-oxidants) and OsteproCare (calcium/magnesium) are the 3 liquid vitamins we give him along with a multi-vitamin. If you are interested in reading more on the Body Balance and the OsteoProCare the website is www.lifeforce.net/20458118. The Fish Oil website is http://www.vitacost.com/CarlsonTheVeryFinestFishOil-500ml. Vitamins are not the only antidote though, it takes alot of work of the parent as well. The parent must understand that self esteem if the most important factor of a child with ADHD/ADD. If that goes you will have an extremely hard time bringing it back up. Sports, kickboxing and any other active activities are very important in their lives. Sports for the activity, kickboxing for the discipline. My son is a very active soccer player and also takes kickboxing. He does not have alot of friends but these are issues that need to be dealt with as well. I hope this helps.

Don't worry about it, honey. Most people (not all) really try their very best in life.

If you know you are doing the best you can, then that's all you can do.

Remember, dear heart. It's not how smart you are, or if you did your homework (get it done) that you will be judged on when you go to Heaven. It is what kind of person you are and how well you lived your life in God's eyes that matters the most.
I think I'm gonna start a new topic about this, reply there if you want.
Good ! If you can be a teacher and treat these kids (special ones) better than these other "so called" teachers did, more power to you. The only ones I see getting screwed is the kids in special ed.

My friend had a lot happen to her son. A forged IEP was one of them. Oh, and let us not forget the asst  principal that liked going to "so called" work and play hide and go seek with her son's note book.

Yeah, I read what you wrote on another Topic about him. If I was his Mom... I don't know what I'd do but I'd definatly be taking him out of that school and taking them to court.

As far as becoming a teacher, other then the steady hours I'd love it, but they have too many restrictions. I know dozens of teachers in my own school district that wanted to help me and tried but just couldn't because they had 35 other kids to work with also and because they have guidelines and rules and all. I'm thinking of looking into Learning Consultant. The system is so screwed up and run like polotics that I don't think I'd get too far on the inside. So I think I'll take them on from the outside with the kids and the parents. IDK, I've still got a couple years to think about it.

Oh, and, Good1, I did set up a New Topic about fighting the system. It's in Parents with ADHD Children and also in Children and young adults with ADHD. It's Fixing the system! We can do it together!   I'd love feedback on it and for you to join the fight. I've been busy with other things so I haven't been able to continue with my research and all but I'm working on it.I agree with SE kids not getting all the help they need. This is even happening in GE also I'm sure. We need a system that gives a curriculum that will fit each persons style and need. My guess we wil here cost to much! That's a pathetic excuse. If the government can send aide to Lebanon or Hesbula after AONTHER COUNTRY blew them to peices I think they can find the money to better fund Education. I think one of the main problems is the people in charge have lost the passion. Now they just do what's easiest and cheapiest. Hmm... That's got me thinking...

If you have any other replies or want to check it out, my post is in Parents of ADHD Children Message Board. Here: http://www.adhdnews.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=20652&TPN= 1My son has been on Folican, which is a blood pressure medicine. He did good on it when it came to doing his work and home responsiblities, but health wise it went down. He was always telling me it feels like someone is standing on his chest. I don't know if you parents check out every little detail about your child's medicine, if not you need to start. The medicine that is prescribed to your child whatever it my be is used for something else. They do not have a medicine just for ADD or ADHD, so your child is taking medicine for something that is not wrong with them. Every medicine has side effects, please look and read them very carefully. Please listen to your child when they say my head hurts or I don't feel good, it could be the medicine they're taking.       Thank you, A Concerned Mother Amber Summar38952.2920949074

I know this is for kids who have adhd to post, but felt the need to respond to your distress (and I am a parent of a girl with adhd).  A planner helps her greatly in that she then doesn't have to remember, it is written down for her.  I also know that some nights she's just not into it and can't seem to get anything done - and not that I condone not doing your homework, but if you are not able to concentrate, really, what can you do!  Some nights (and mind you I don't let her use it as an excuse to be lazy), but some nights she just can't concentrate and well, she gets a note!  Her teacher are aware that she is adhd and there never appears to be an issue as long as its not a habit/happen all the time.

As for your dad, well, I was a big disbeliever or adhd until my daughter was having so any problems at home and school and we took her to a pediatrician.  She was diagnosed with adhd and in living with her - I can 100% say - that it exists and is a 'medical condition'.

She tries her best and that's all I can ask - and that's all your dad should ask of you - whether you have adhd or not - that is all any parent should ask of their child.  Sometimes she'll come home with a so so mark and I know she studied and tried her best - and I say to her - did you try your best and she says yes - and I say, well then that's the best you could do and thats all i expect!

Goodluck!

Just try your best and let your parents know that you ARE trying your best
and you can't do any better.
