Normally that is the case with DS being Goofy, Silly, Loud, etc. I am thinking alot of it had to do with the fact that he could not find a paper for a skit they were to do on Fri. and the teacher said Ok. you get to do a poster for the skit instead and he got pissed! The Dr. and I have talked about adding another 30mg in the afternoon dose for the rest of the school day and hopefully thru HW time.
If you dont mind what MG do you give for afternoon?
Thanks
Ava
Thinks for the answers. I am going to check out the GabbaCalm next time i go to LifeGrocery or wholefoods see if they carry it. Right now he takes Melantonin and Seroquel 25mg at night for sleep. Nothing works for long wth him!
I wish we could almost set up a Referral of Psy or Dr's in our areas that we like etc.
Thanks
Ava
My ds grade 11, takes the same dose of Ritalin LA and he take a second dose about 6 1/2 hours later to last the school day and for homework. It has never made him angry, nor have any other stimulants. When his meds wear off, he is just goofy silly and ready for fun. There are other parents whose children have demonstrated anger and raged while on medication and others after the meds wear off; but I can't remember the ending diagnosis for each case. I am sure they will respond soon.We started DS on Ritalin LA 60mg last Friday, Monday i got a great email from teachers working great all day until about 2pm (he takes it at 7am in the mornings) so i figured right about 7 hrs we were getting out of it. Today i get another email and phone call from his teachers that it pretty much was completely gone by 1pm and he was extremely Angry! tearing up papers, slammng stuff down on his desk by the time he got home at 215 yep... all meds were GONE! he was Angry. punching pillows fussing about teachers, etc. He is in th Grade 11 yr old.
Has anyone seen where they get Angry, etc. when it wears off? We had talked to the Dr. on Tue about adding possibly another dose about 1230 - 1pm to get him thru the afternoon but now i am beginning to wonder. Yrs ago he took Dexadrine and it would put him into Rages. We had decent luck with Metadate CD 40mg last yr i am thinking we need to go back to that, the only reason they changed it he was not sleeping well it was staying with him so long.
Any ideas???
We have actually used Clonidine before for sleep at night. My DD is on it for sleep now. We are going to be adding 30mg of Ritalin LA about 1230 in the afternoons before the 60mg wears off. We are also scheduled for a Psy Appt on the 14th of April. The pediatrician has decided that he is too much for her to handle. We have seen this Psy. before and i switched to the Ped. due to fact he is on the other side of town and i hated the drive but looks like will end up doing it. The other thing i hated about going to his ofc. we are in his ofc for about 5 min. with prescriptions and out of there. Until i can find a Psy in our area that is good and on our Ins. then not much of a choice.
Thanks
Ava
I understand exactly where you are coming from. It took me about 4 different psych's until I found one I was comfortable with and who actually knows what she is doing. She is the most sought after Psych where I am from, but it was well worth the eight months it took me to finally get an appt and get established with her. It was well worth the wait. I wish you the best of luck! My son's doc specializes in behavioral medicine. He takes the same dose as morning. sometimes he takes short acting Ritalin 16.25 mg for late homework if needed. He metabolizes methylphenidate quickly. He used to be on clonidine for sleep. That had a "small window of opportunity" to fall asleep and he needed to be in bed with the lights out. GabbaCalm helped him get off clonidine and now he doesn't need anything. I didn't like the clonidine because I worried about accidental overdosing or inability to rouse in an emergency...yes, I worry alot say my kids.
I am looking forward to the ritalin patch, Daytrana as a possibility so he wouldn't have to remember to take his meds.
LOL You look forward to the patch, but I bet you aren't looking forward to the co-pay when it hits the market
The noon dose is usually not very high, if your son is having little outbursts as you describe, I would recommend you ask your doctor if Clonidine might help calm him down. It is a heart medication and I know it sounds scary to be put on a heart med at a young age. I can't think of anything else other than a benzo, but since your son is 11, I doubt any doctor would rx a benzo, and if by some miracle your son does get rxed a benzo it would be at a very very low dose. As I mentioned previously ask about Clonidine.sorry, i ment to throw a link in my last post http://www.rxlist.com/rxboard/clonidine.pl?read=10Richie218238807.4978240741Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
My son was diagnosed last year and started taking Ritalin LA 20 mg almost a year ago - at the time he was 8 (2nd Grade). At first the results were dramatically positive. Both he and his teachers have been extremely pleased - frankly, I never imagined it could work as well as this.
Just in the last month or so, the teachers started noticing a resurgence of symptoms - talking non-stop, rocking and moving around a lot, and some impulsivity/aggressiveness.
The pediatrician increased his dose to 30 mg but it didn't seem to help. I thought maybe it was due to some anxiety because we were considering changing his school next year - we decided about a week ago to keep him where he is (he really wanted to stay), but no improvement.
By the way, he's in a Montessori school - has the same 2 teachers this year as last year and a lot of latitude for moving around and choosing his activities.
I'd appreciate any advice, feedback or stories of similar experiences.
