Using sign language is another form of comunicating and because children with ADHD are highly distractable and lacking focus, whether your using your hands or speaking verbally, the same level of distractability will still be there. Im sure your objective is to get the childs attention but the fact is that while your using sign language, the child will still be distracted by everything else that is going on around them. Also, using such a method might make the child stand out and thus making them a target for teasing by other children. However, you must be a very caring teacher for the fact that your looking for a way to help our children function better educationally and we certainly need more teachers like youMore than most kids, my son loves using the thumbs up signal and winks at me.  He enjoys communicating with me using body language over a crowded room or school setting.  He will be up on stage doing a presentation, and he will wink or thumbs up me!  Also I find my son responds very well to touch.  If I cant calm him or get his attention, I will hold his shoulders or put my hand on his leg and wait until he looks at me.  Without this contact we could go around in circlesRae7038231.6955208333I am an educator and a student.  I am interested in any information any of you may have on how children with ADHD respond when taught sign language.  Does it help the childrens attention when using their hands?  Have any of you experimented with this?
