Hi! My son did neurofeedback, and I was very pleased with the results. My son did not have behavior problems with his ADHD, however. It is expensive and time consuming, and I don't recommend it for children younger than ten or so, for the child has to be able to sit still for an hour a session, two or three times a week, to do it.
Did your son have these behavior issues before being put on meds? Who dxed him?
He was diagnosed in 2nd grade by a psychiatrist but we decided not to medicate him. He has issues with attention and impulsivity but he's not hyperactive. We took him to another psychiatrist again when he was in 3rd grade after I hid in the back of the classroom and watched him. He would pay attn for a few minutes then stare off for a few minutes the entire day. That doc also agreed that it was ADD and we started the meds. We used the home/school surveys and he had my son do computerized tests. I made an appt for an orientation seminar at the Drake Institute but I found out he'd have to go three times a week and it's at least an hour away with traffic. I found another place closer to home that I have a call into.
Thanks for the replies!
HockeyGirl38807.6469560185Your son may well be a good candidate for neurofeedback, then. Has your son been tested for LD's? No, he hasn't. He has high grades on standardized tests and is in the advanced math, spelling, and reading groups. Was he able to make those grades before being put on meds? How are his social skills? He's always had good grades on the standardized tests, it's the classroom tests and in class work that he struggles with. He is able to make friends but they don't always want to be around him. He's very bossy and loud, he's also an only child.I tried to do a search before posting but the search function isn't working. My 11 year old son has on stimulants for 2 years now and we're not having much success. He's only on 10 mg of Adderall because when we increase his dose he becomes aggressive. We've also tried Concerta. He's been very emotional latey, crying all the time and very clingy with me. His grades aren't any better than they were without the meds. His doctor decided to try Wellbutrin along with the Adderall due to his mood changes. He started taking it on Monday and this week has been a disaster at home and at school. He's crying all the time and can't stay focused at all. My plan was to get him off all drugs this summer when I have a lot of time to devote to just him. I'm a full-time RN student right now and don't have a lot of time outside of the school, clinical and studying. His dad has been hearing commercials for the Drake Institute here in CA where they do neurofeedback. I wanted to find out if anyone has had success with using it and how much of a time commitment it takes. I can hold off until summer when I don't have school but I'd rather start now if possible.
Hello,
over the past few days, i have been asking simular questions about neuro's and why my sons drugs weren't working like the doctor said they would.
The answers that i mostly got where take him to a neuro they are great, the find out exactly whats wrong with them, and place them one the right drugs and amounts. From what i have heard it is expensive and it does take some time because they have to go completely over everything..
But hey what have we got to lose? i'd rather spend the money and have a child that is happy and not distroying everything and fighting with me.
I'll be definatley looking into it!!!
Hmmm...Well, we did not have any luck with stimulants, either. My son is now on Tenex, and it has worked wonders for him. Personally, I did not see any reason to keep my son on stimulants, when they were not working. You have to make your own decisions, but my thoughts are that drugs have side effects and potential dangers, and we parents have to weigh the side effects and potential dangers of taking the drug against the side effects and potential dangers of not taking the drug. At my son's age, his impulsivity is very dangerous, so he will be medicated, but if the drugs were giving him the kinds of side effects you are seeing, I think I would be looking at a different drug. KWIM?
