Frustrated Mom and Dad PLEASE HELP! | ADHD Information
The seizures are caused when he has a fever they always said he would out grow them. They called them convulsions in my day. They run in my family. I'm going to ask him to go for treatment one more time. Tell him it is his only choice to change his life around. He is facing more criminal charges so maybe it will be court ordered in his sentence. I pray there are angels watching over him all the time. I have always gone in with my son for his appointments with his Dr. He doens't have a license so I have to take him. He hasn't ever told me not to go in with him nor has the Dr. asked me to leave. She did tell me this last time that I do too much for him and she told him he needs to make the right choice and go for treatment. Are you saying that you sit in your son's therapy sessions with him? Our son has learning disabilities, growing up we had him tested in jr high because the school wasn't helping us. The neuropsychologist told us he had learning disabilities so then he was able to join in the learning disabilitiy classes offered at school. The kids treated him awful. All through high school he tried to fit it, he lost many jobs because of trying to fit in. My son is now 24 has had many legal issues and has been in jail numerous times. In Dec. I had taken him to his neurologist he has febrile seizures and is on depakote I asked her if she thought he could have ADHD because of everything he has been through he now has alcohol problems. She said yes hs was diagnosed years ago when he saw the Dr. for his learning disabilities. Nothing was done, maybe his life could've been different. He has been in 3 car accidents. The last one I had taken him back to the neurologist and asked her to help us. She was going to treat him for the ADHD but she asked him if he would take the medication and he said maybe with slight attitude, so she said that she wouldn't treat him, and that she would see him in 6 months for his seisures and told him to get treatment for his alcohol problem. My question is if you can't make the right decisions on anything how can you get treatment without medication to help you think straight? This is so hard for us we have tried to help him every way that we can. He doesn't want ot listen to us.
It is never too late to begin ADHD meds, if this is what your son has. I am unfamiliar with the seizures you are discussing, so I cannot give any advice on that, and I do not know if the ADHD meds would interfere with the seizures or if he could take the meds since he has the seizures. This is something to discuss with a physician. The problem, of course, is that your son is twenty four, so he is an adult. You cannot make him do anything, including taking meds or going to AA, without getting a court order to become his legal guardian. This can be very difficult to do. My sister is seriously mentally ill, and my father became her legal guardian, with full control over her finances and the right to discuss her mental health treatment and to choose her mental health treatment options. My father had to hire an attorney to do this and go to court a couple of times, and, again, my sister is seriously mentally ill and completely disabled. All in all, it cost him about ,000. You cannot ask someone to treat your son or to discuss your son's treatment with them, without this court order, though. Is this something you want to do?
He hasn't seen anyone for therapy. When he goes to see his neurologist I go in his appointments with him. We can't get him to go to any therapy of any kind. He his way out of control. He needs help and he doesn't think he does. The way I am understanding is he needs to go for treatment 1st for the alcohol and drug problems he has then they will treat him for the adhd. I will check out the above website. Thanks for the help.
