Your Advice Needed! As an adult with ADD and a 17 year old son with it, I can relate. One thing you can try is a natural supplement containing EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and fish oil. It helps us, give it a try. I'm sure there are more products than this but here is a link to the one we use: http://www.shaklee.net/livinghealthierlives/product/20234 Good luck and just remember to keep it natural! Greetings, Bay! I’m new here, but I’m full of answers(or full of something, anyway)
My question to all of you is, is meds the best thing?
My answer is, “no”
Will drugs take away my ability to be creative and funny?
How would I know? I’ve never been you while taking medication! (Hint: that was supposed to be funny). Seriously now, I have found that Adderall™ doesn’t make me any less funny. As for creativity, it’s not an issue because I’m not creative. In general, I’d say that the more creative you are, the more adversely your creativity would be affected by stimulants. However, one must be careful as to the precise definition of “creative”, since few people acknowledge their own lack thereof
Do any of you have any experience with Natural Remedies such as Focus Factor, etc...?
Yes, and they are a waste of time, money, and give false hope
Tell me of any drugs that may have changed your life for the better
Only one - Adderall™. Among the rest that I’ve tried (including Zyprexa, Risperdal, Depakote, Paxil, Zoloft, Wellbutrin and even Ritalin), none have affected me well, and some made me very un-well
and please, if you can add the severity of your ADHD.
Hard for me to say precisely. I’d imagine that I am relatively wacky, but I have developed quite a bit of mental discipline to control my outward behavior. I have often said that I am the most reasonable and rational insane person of whom I am aware.

I have not yet been diagnosed. In the up coming week I'll be seeing a Psychistrist. My question to all of you is, is meds the best thing? Will drugs take away my ability to be creative and funny?
For my son, the meds allowed him to slow done enough & focus so that he could be creative!
Thank you for your reply; I would like to know is there any side effects?
Every medicine has side effects, have you ever looked at a Tylonel bottle!
Hi Baybunne, I am 34 and went my whole life with Add, but back then Add was never mentioned, i was put on an ed plan, and that was that. I look back and wish i was medicated, then maybe school would have come easier for me, and i wouldn't have been a crazy teen anger for my parents. My mom swears i was adhd, but after all those years of living with it i never bothered to get tested i just learned to cope. I feel alot of it is hereditary, my ten year old son has adhd, and is doing well with meds., i also have two nephews 17, and 11 both with adhd, the 17 year old is just like my son, where the 11 year old takes less meds. My son also has the Dr. i had as a child and i asked him once, i said it's like looking in a mirror sometimes, he goes yeah Cody is alot like you were at that age, he said the only difference is the years, and how medications are available now. Hang in there and you'll be fine, just make sure you find the right meds. that work for you.
Razzlynne; in trying to get a better understanding of this disorder, can you tell me what symtoms you had prior to meds and how they've improved since. And maybe what type of med are you taking?
It also doesn't help that theres a large spread skepticism about it due to drug abuse. Drug abuse occurs when medication is not taken as prescribed. ADHD medication when given the right dose and the right medication doesn't promote abuse. Many of the skeptics that you read about sometimes are spammers looking to promote their products, scientologists who believe that medicating children is criminal when in fact one should be giving money their to the companies they promote to sell their products that claim to cure or people that don't have accurate information but thier opnions are taken as fact. The interenet is a dangerous place sometimes for sources of information as anyone can print anything. I suggest that you write down all your questions when you see your psychiatrist as perhaps he can give you more insight into learning about medications and I also recommend that you purchase a book...Straight Talk about Psychiatric Medications for kids by Timothy E. Exactly my point. There are many scam artists out there and thats why its important that we all get accurate information instead of falling prey to scam artists whereas there only agenda is to emtpy our wallets with the promise of a cure. They dont require you to be rich. They get rich off of parents deserpately seeking treatments for their children and the church of scientology is a big offender. Hello Everyone, This is my first time at this site, and I can't tell you how happy I am that I found it. For the first time ever, I feel that I can express my myself about this ailment I've been dealing with all my life. Without being looked upon as a freak. Or someone desperate for attention. Since this is a relatively newly acknowledged condition. There aren't too many professionals with the experience needed to diagnose it. Or prescibe the proper meds needed. It also doesn't help that theres a large spread skepticism about it due to drug abuse. I have always been aware of my feelings of anxiety, that often triggers an uncontrollable hyperactive response. In reading some of your messages I can totally identify with the "background noise" or "TV channel" discriptions that stops us from keeping our thoughts together. Finishing the simplest task, or even a sentence can be trying. When these things occure in the presents of others, my desperate need to conceal these feelings may even give off a frantic appearance. This is at it's worst. Though, the above is not very offten. It is very damaging when it does happen. What does happen frequently, is me being dispondent. People can be talking to me and for an instant I block them out of my thoughts. Most times they do notice. Often times I have a tough time giving the proper responce. I'm sure on numerous occasions, people have walked away from me thinking that I was, if not Retarded then Menally Unstable. People who know me just sums it up to me having an off day. Though I am not a violent person by nature, I am capable of spurts of extreme anger. Often times all that was needed was for me to express myself more clearly. I guess impatience is a symptom of this ailment. Also I am all to aware of my i mpulsive urges. Rarely, it can be viewed as "eratic" behavior. I have a 12 yr. old son. His experience with school has not been a positive one. He is not a violent child, but in class he iis not focused and extremely disruptive(class clown). When he does do his homework he forgets to turn it in. At home he is just as forgetful. And I can see how his hyperactivity and anxiousness presents a problem with other kids. There is no question that he suffers from the same problem as I do. Which brings me to my first question; How much of this is: a. Hereditary b. Chemically imbalanced due to vitamin deficienties such as Magnesium, Fatty Acids ect. c. Unconsciencely learned behavior from afflicted parents and home enviroment Or does one have a little bit to with the other? And if so, is meds the best responce(especilly where children are involved)? I've noticed some of you mothers are dealing with feelings of guilt! As for my son, I always thought if I could just gain controll in my life. Provide him with a stronger home base. Be more involved in school ect... It will inturn give him the confidence he needs to excell. And most of his anxieties/anxt will subside, and hopefully his hyperactivity will too. In any case, meds for him will be a last result. I have not yet been diagnosed. In the up coming week I'll be seeing a Psychistrist. My question to all of you is, is meds the best thing? Will drugs take away my ability to be creative and funny? Do any of you have any experience with Natural Remedies such as Focus Factor,ect...? Tell me of any drugs that may have changed your life for the better, and please, if you can add the severity of your ADHD. All responses will be greatly appreciated! Please excuse any spelling errors. My ADHD doesn't give me the patience for a dictionary on every word! (lol) Thank you Jose for your colorful reply; I hope you can appreciate your own creativity! You say meds isn't the best thing is there a reason why you feel that way? Has Adderall aided you in controlling your outward behavior, and or given you some inner comfort?
