I posted on here about a month ago and asked where all of the success stories were... well, to give people hope here is our story (so far).
My wonderfully energetic 6 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD.
Prior to the diagnosis there were a lot of issues with impulse control, body control, etc. at school. Spent a lot of time at the principal's office, missed recess (worst punishment for an ADHD kid!), disruptive in class, etc. After getting a referral to EBD, we decided to finally seek professional help. Son is bright, of course, and being a mental health professional myself, I saw the symptoms of ADHD (ignored them for a couple of years, of course!).
Declined the EBD referral, saw a psychological for testing, saw the pediatrician, was prescirbed Ritalin for a trial. Things changed in a couple of days. My son was on task, was not impulsive, got notes sent home every day saying that he did a great job at recess. The teacher called to say how good he was doing, etc. He'd crash when the meds wore off after school, but the ped. said to give 2.5 mg. after school, which worked wonders.
The proudest moment of my life was at my son's kindergarden music concert where he stood still, sang and participated, looked at me in the audience, smiled and waved. No wiggles, no impulsive behavior, etc. I drove home from the concert with tears in my eyes.
We did taper him UP to 15 mg 2X/day but that was too much. He is irritable, obsessive and unhappy. Called the ped. today and we'll bring him back down to 10 mg. 2X/day.
So there is HOPE! Really! He is sitting coloring right now (has been for 45 minutes straight). I know Ritalin isn't the cure all and doesn't work for anyone, but I'd love to invite Tom Cruise and other naysayers into my home to view the difference in our child. He's now able to be the friend/student/son that ADHD masked.
Thanks for reading. I wish everyone else hope!
