[QUOTE=The Resistance!]Yeah, there are ridiculous points. This makes me think of the movie Fight Club which I loved despite *much* stupidity and a silly life philosophy of sorts.

I find the central character unlikable, no doubt about it. She was twisted into her own philosophy so much she had him found not guilty in the end of blowing up an entire building because they changed his artistic vision. The jury was out only a brief moment.

Terribly bad. Not to even mention that rape thing (since you alreADY DID).

Lol, if I remember correctly (it's been a few years), the building he burnt down was like affordable housing for poor people or something. Because it did not all exactly meet his artistic vision. That's nice. Lol..

She does have a knack for making ya root for ppl who on second thought are really not sympathetic.

PS Love fight club :)

GarbagePailKid38820.0037962963This is better than the "Book Club" in the basement.  Of course it hasn't really gotten on it's feet yet.  This is cool because I can hear all about the book and I don't even have to read it! Yeah, there are ridiculous points. This makes me think of the movie Fight Club which I loved despite *much* stupidity and a silly life philosophy of sorts.

So are we really having a book club?

Is anyone actually gonna agree on reading something? Res- Have you found a way to get elementary particles?

Maybe a movie club would work better on an adhd board? Where the discussion can be in Poll form?

(poll option one: First fifteen minutes were great! )

we were going to read Elementary Particles but the movie club idea is a good one.

Let's start with "Fight Club"

See the movie this week - discussion begins next Friday in the basement.

(I thought I would just seize the Presidency of the movie club. If not there will be too many tangents and discussions I think like the book club discussion downstairs.)

Let's see how many are interested - if people are in, I'll take nominations via p.m. for next movie and post a poll. OK?

On the book club idea - I am a slow reader too usually. I am going to read "Elementary Particles." If anyone wants to join in, come on.

Somebody please notify the basement we're coming and tell'em what we're doing.

Now can I have a Vive El Presidente!

:-)

El Presidente El Resistane!
The book IS too long - I often felt a need to edit it down and skipped maybe 100 paragraphs.

GPK - Library book sale in the morning and I bet I can cop Atlas Shrugged or Elementary Particles. There's always the actual library if my mission fails........

They have Fight Club DVD too i think.
Does it come on tape? wouldn't it be more trouble to read it off a roll of tape?Anyone else read this book?

I can't say it is all good.

But it has some views on being an original thinker, an individual and a creative person I found very interesting and might well apply to the lives of, ahem, people like us.

One of the main characters endures torture almost to be himself, to think originally for himself. He is in ways an unlikable doofus but he is, above all, what he wants to be, which is himself.

I had to read this book for a job I had.  It is an interesting piece of literature.  I decided after I read it and talked about it with the co-workers and such, that it was Ayan Rand's further attempt to convert people to her philosophy of life.  I find that her philosophy sounds good in the beginning, but it has basic flaws that end up sinking the whole thing for me.

I have seen people follow her philosophy and live by it to the letter, and I have watched them treat people really poory because of it.

So, in retrospect, I liked the book for some of the ideas and for the writing - Ayan Rand is a great writer - but the philosophy is not for me.

Hey resistance,

LOL the fountainhead!!! Is that the one where Ayn Rand gets really passionate about the evils of decorative architecture?!

LOOOL

Lol!!

(mechanical voice):

Building-Must-Be-Perfectly-Square-Every-Brick-Must-Serve-Pur pose

Loool sure worked for dumpy projects yahaha

But it is awesome how she describes different metals with fondness

Well, now yall have peaked my interest, but I'll soon get over it [QUOTE=GarbagePailKid]

No, I think you miss her point entirely. She would have to be here to tell us her point but the buildings/architecture were only a vehicle - it could have been about chefs, mechanics, anyone really. That's what I think.....

Her philosophy is flawed, yes. But I liked the angles on creativity, individualism, original thinking.

I really loved her imagery in her descriptions.  I was wishing that she would write for a reason other that trying to convert me to her philosophy.

I had a coworker who totally disagreed with me on this point.  He thought she wrote about life as she saw it or as she thought it should be.

I love to write and I like studying different styles.  She does write well.

I also love Thomas Wolfe.  You Can't Go Home  . . . "Some things never change.  Somethings always remain the same . . ."  There is a whole paragraph here that I totally love to read!!!

Sorry to change the subject -

Back to the Fountainhead. We were also supposed to read Atlas Shrugged  for this job also.  I liked the Fountainhead much better, but maybe it was because I read it first.  I didn't make it through Atlas Shrugged.  It was the same philosophy I guess and I was tired of being spoon fed it through her writing.

Sorry, I'm just a little out of sorts with this company that "required" us to read these books.  I would not have chosen to read them.

And the particular individuals she uses to convey larger points DO reflect her personal philosophy...preference for utility over ornament--worship cold metal boxes (despite people's 'irrational' preferences)

But the passionate, self absorbed, alienated, megalomaniac, misunderstood artist who remains true to a vision is kinda sweet.

Hey again res,

lol the one thing I learned from the book is that rape is an effective tool of seduction...or maybe it only works for super genius artists

Yay Ayn Rand!
(you go girl!) loool

Utterly stupid movie at times yet tinged with such attitude!
Good social commentary sometimes.
I love it - it is like real life in a way, sort through the absurd and cling to the good.

An odd, weird, angry aquaintance (kidding!) recommended the book "Elementary Particles" to me. Let's all read it. I plan to no matter what. It bis not a science text either - the title made me yawn at first. It has sex!

It was recommended to me very, um, emphatically. I can't so no to that. Strong suggestions are dancing lessons - listen to them. (K. Vonnegut sorta)

Does it come on tape?  I'm still on page 42 in Skywriters.

hey res,

I agree that the architect could have been anyone with a unique view that gets stifled by majority/herd mentality/politics..was making fun of the particular individual...for example, he could have been the opressed individual genius who wanted to create fast food chains that only sold liquid cheeseburgers, despite lack of clientele, because he is after all, a genius oppressed individual, and liquid cheeseburger haters are just stupid sheep.

Hey Resistance,

When I saw fight club, I thought it was wierd that the unabomber signed his manifesto FC(alias), and claimed to be a *group* of people, not just the one person that he was. The philosophy of fight club is similar to the unabomber's...down to blowing sh* up and violence for the sake of becoming more alive.

I was wondering if Fight Club was based on the unabomber... multiple personalities, same initials, same philosophy....

or just coincidence...

The New York Times says that Elementary Particles is a "DEEPLY REPUGNANT READ!!!:"

He he he!  doesn't that make you wanna read it? no lukewarm

I didn't see anyone mention that this book is about 700 pages long, longest book I have ever read, and all the crazy amounts of imagery, by the end, I felt it unnecessary, nevertheless, I liked it!
