My daughter was recently switched to Concerta. Which helps her more than the Adderall xr and she has a much healthier appetite. But during her exam they found something wrong. We went to the heart Institute if SWFL and had a echocardiogram. They diagnosed her with MVP(mitral valve prolapse) and she has regurgitation. MVP is a condition where the mitral valve in the heart is weak and allows backflow of the blood into the heart.
The symptoms of MVP include increased adrenalyn and heart palpatations. I was wondering if anyone elses child has been diagnosed with MVP or a similar heart disease? I am trying to find out if there is any relation between MVP and ADHD because it causes anxiety as well. Could it possible be that all these years she was misdiagnosed? It is a congenital disorder.Any information is greatly appreciated. It is a month before we see the pediatric heart surgeon.
I really appreciate all the responses. I plan to check out the links you added MegMguire. For some reason they did not come up when I did my search. I also appreciate the prayers Jillette. It was a shock, especially since I am leaving this week to take my youngest to PA for surgery due to Erbs Palsy, a obstetrical brachila plexus injury. (injurednewborn.com)
I have learned that my daughter will need prophylactic antibiotics prior to any dental work or surgeries and beta blockers. She has to limit caffeine and chocolate and sugars, which is not new due to the ADHD. But he inability to participate in some activities breaks her heart. She has to be watched for sympotms such as heart arrythmias, anxiety, pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, and hopefully not the more severe symptoms such as stroke, heart attack and heart failure. She will see a prdiatric cardiologist next month. And I plan to ask a million questions. Including the use of Conceta for ADHD, if that is in fact what she has. I worry she has been misdiagnosed like your friends daughter Imac.
NoTellin, I sure hate to hear that your son was diagnosed with a a heart disesase as well. I will definately do some research of the boards to see what all I can find out before her appointment. I will post any new information I find out, in case anyone elses child is diagnosed with this too.
My son has congenital heart disease involving the pulmonary valve, and suggested ADHD. And the other member with the heart/ADHD combo deal is Bailey. You can search under that user name if you are curious.
From what I have read there are more occurrences of ADHD in children with heart disease--the numbers are above average. But there is no proof that they are scientifically connected. Meaning, there is no proof that the congential heart disease lead to the ADHD-like behavior.
As far as the meds go, the cardio may not favor stimulants for your child because of the heart issue. She may have had undetected congential heart disease, and the stimulant (or the required tests while taking the stimulant)simply revealed the heart issue. Or perhaps the stimulant worsened an undetected heart condition. My cardio said he does not recommend the stimulants. There are non-stimulant options, but I think those depend on the age of the child. The really youngs ones cannot take those. There was a lot of talk some time ago about the FDA considering the black label for the ADHD meds due to the connection to heart issues on this board. You may want to search the board for that so you can talk to the cardiologist.
IMac38945.6159143519I am not familiar with what your child is going through but I will keep her in my prayers. I do not like to see children ill.
There's some interesting info if you "google" MVP and Adderall or heart disease and Adderall (looks like it can complicate a pre-exisiting condition).... this is one of many articles that pulled up:

It does mention Omegas on there (which can benefit heart disease) so you may want to check out the Alternatives to Meds section of this board. Many of us are using Omegas with great success.
