My 7 Year Old Is Picking Sores On Him | ADHD Information

Thank you for letting me know, I am going to ask the doctor to change his meds to see if this helps. How old is your son and what is his dosage? I don't think he picked at all before the meds.  I have just noticed him doing it within the past 6-7 months, he has been on the meds for about 2 years or maybe less then that.

I've been looking around for a natural method, I came across Focus and a few others, has anyone tried them?

My son is almost 7  and is currently taking 20mg of long acting Adderall.  I think Adderall is alot stronger than concerta mg for mg.

Our doc told me that all kids metabolize the meds differently and it does not have much to do with age or weight ( at least the stimulants don't... Strattera is weight based).

Any stimulant (like Concerta) can increase anxiety.  Your son's picking sores is a symptom of anxiety.  You need to tell the prescribing physician what you are observing and let him/her make a decision about what med changes should be made.

Furthermore, because your son has so many other symptoms -- developmental and speech delays -- I recommend an evaluation by a neuropsychologist, who can assess for many childhood disorders, including but not limited to ADHD.  There is a good chance you're looking at something beyond ADHD (like high-functioning autism).

my son picked his fingers when he was on concerta and strattera...I am not sure which one caused the picking but it has stopped and we have stopped both of these meds...he is taking adderall ....

Did your son pick his skin before the meds?

Could it be bordum?  My child has a different problem she has all year round allergies and when they bother  her she digs at her nose and does so at school, dinner table wherever.  Have you tried what i do when you are having quiet time together maybe before bed time discuss it and what to do next time he feels he needs to pick to make him aware and what to do instead.

I've tried talking to him and telling him it is not good for his body and that the sores could be come infected and he might get sick. He tries not to but the urge usually wins. As you mentioned it could be bordem because if he is doing something then he does not do it and usually that is gross motors skills out side playing and jumping around.  He is very hard to entertain inside. Thanks for your input.

I was reading up on Concerta and it says if you or a family member have Tourette's Syndrome then you should not take this medication.  I told his doctor "MILITARY' my neice has Tourette's Syndrome but he never mentioned my son should not take the meds.  I am going to look for a different doctor for  him.  I hate military doctors and no offense to any who may read this it's just I have a chronic illness myself and have been put through the ringer with them.

A few years ago he was evaluated by a Neuro psychologist and she eliminated everything but ADHD.  The problem is he goes up and down on doing things.  One minute he's off the charts on intelligence then the next he is low. No one can quite pinpoint his problems. He also has Binocular Visual Disorder and we had to get some visual therapy going as well until we ran out of money because insurance would not cover it.

Then I think you should have him evaluated by a board-certified child psychiatrist.  It's important to know what's really going on and have him treated properly. This is a common side effect with stimulant medication.  My 9 year old does the same and bless his heart, gets made fun of at school because of it...many kids call him gross because he will pick at his sores...so I have a choice, all A's and calmness on medication where his teachers can tolerate him, or take him off, where the teacher's can't tolerate him, his grades suffer and he is isolated by his peers due to his hyperactiveness...it just doesn't seem fair, does it?  I choose the former and just continually explain to him about infections, etc.  If he is home and I see him starting on this, I give him gum to chew on..of course they aren't allowed to chew gum in school...such a shame because it truly helps him stop from picking if he is occupied chewing gum, rather than his fingers, or sores....good luck. When you stopped the Stims did you put him on anything eles? No, after a period of time with no meds, we put him back on the adderall.  As I said the tics come and go.  He might have them for a couple weeks and then there is nothing for months.  His dr is not concern with it.  I personnally feel its more of a nervous tic than anything.  We noticed it more at the beginning of the school year.  New school with a new teacher.  He has resently crossed over from cub scouts to boy scout.  Entering a new troop and a new group of kids.We did stop my sons meds to see if he did have TS and the drs ruled that out.  He said it is just a side effect of the med.  He doesn't have them all the time, they come and go.

Many kids with Tourette's Syndrome can take stimulants such as Concerta.  However, you just need to monitor them to see if the stims increase the tics.

This picking sounds like it could be a tic.  The only way to know for sure is to stop the Concerta and see what happens.

My son has TS and ADHD, and did start picking at his face when his dose was on the higher side.  I stopped the stims and the picking stopped immediately.

He'll be 12 next month and weighs 108.  He's been on adderall for a total of 5 years now.  Mostly on the regular form and switched to xr about 8 months ago.

How old is your son and how much does he weigh?  I am thinkinf of trying a different med on my son.

My son also picks at the skin around his finger nails.  It never occurred to me that it be a side effect or tick of the meds.  He is on adderall xr 30mg.  He goes through periods of time where he develops different ticks, they last for a couple months and then disappears.

I am so worried about my son, he sits and picks sores on himself, picks his nails, toes and sores if he has any.  I took him to the doctor and he recommneded for him to see Mental health.  He is on Concerta 18mg for ADHD and it does help him in school but he can not seem to stop picking.  He hates doing it and it upsets him when he does it and he does not like doing it. He does it while watching tv, taking a bath, sitting in a car.  Are there any others out there having the same problems.  My heart breaks for my son. He was born developmentally delayed and has been in speech, Ocupational therapy, goes to special ed.  He is doing better but it is so upsetting because he knows something is different about him. I just want to cry for him.

Take him to see someone in mental health.  He could have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, either brought on by meds or not.

Thank you,

I just hate the thought of him being on so many meds at the age of 7.  He hates going to the doctor. His doctor did say we could stop the meds to see if  he quits doing it or go to mental health. If we stop the meds then that messes him up in school.  He just looks at me and says he hates doing it and he doesn't know why he does it.  This is actually bothering him.

They may just need to change meds.  My son had a bit of OCD when we tried 20 mg Focalin xr.  Now he is on 60 mg of Strattera and 10mg Focalin xr.  So far it is better.  I think he somehow skipped his meds today, as he is crazy.IMac38945.6151157407

Well I am thinking 18 mg is not a whole lot however, I have a problem putting him on a higher dose.  Mine gets crazy to without his meds.  Have you ever heard of a child being born with this ADHD because I swear mine was.  As soon as he learned to walk it was in a run and he has been runinng ever since. I just wished he did not have all of the other issues with it.  I just told him I was talking to you and telling him that your little boy does the same thing.  He just smiled and said well we both do it and can't stop huh

I think he was relieved to know he is not alone I think I need Prozac LOL
