No, he really hasn't had a problem with that.  He used to have a hard time at the beginning of each school year with adjusting to the new teacher.  But as the years go by he is doing better, but that may also be do to the fact that he goes to a small catholic school and everyone knows everyone else.  The only time he has problems with mouthing back is when he's not on his meds.  He has had problems with tics coming and going, but they only last a few weeks than there's nothing for months.

I have always lower his dose for the summer and he has never had a problem with that.  The doctor even encouraged it, he says it lessens the chance of his body becoming immune to the dose.  We than return him to the same dose when school starts.

As a habit, no, he does not have trouble sleeping.  Occasionally, yes, but than everyone does once in a while.  He is normally asleep by 9:30 - 10:00 on week nights and about midnight on the weekends.  I do, however, let him play soft music when he goes to bed and I simply turn it off after he's asleep.

My son is on Adderall XR and has been on it for the past year.  I like it as this way I don't have to rely on the school to give him his pill plus it usually lasts about 8 hours for him.My 11 year old son has been on the same dose of adderall for the past 4 years and about 8 months ago we switched him from regular to xr but not raise the dose any.  The new school he was attending didn't want to deal with giving him meds, thus the change or xr.  In the end I think it was easier on him too.  Not having to go to the office every day for meds.  There were a few tics we noticed in the beginning but those have disappeared.  Granted everyone reacts differently to all the different meds, but if its easier to only have to give him one pill a day, why not try it.  You can always go back to the regular form.  By the way my son hasn't had any problems with sleeping.

thanks for the info

we just changed his dose last week and it really hasnt seemed to help a whole lot yet at school. there have been several times the school didnt make sure he had his afternoon pill. this frustrates me so bad because he is the one who suffers the most. it makes homework time a nightmare. i would like to switch to one pill a day, but i want to wait and give this higher dose a little longer first.

he also had a tick from a previous med that freaked me out. he actually didnt get the tick until he had been on the med for awhile. it didnt go away until we took him off the med. i want to lower his dose back when school is out. he really doesnt need it as much through the summer.

(teencat) does your son have a hard time disrupting class? my son's teacher has tried so many things to improve his behavior. i have ordered some books that i think might help with school. he has a hard time respecting teachers and me too. i took his games and tv away for a whole week thinking this might make him realize he needs to work on his attitude, but this week he is back to running his mouth. i am out of answers for now on how to discipline his disresptfulness.

he has always had a hard time sleeping. he stays up so late and doesnt get good rest. i think this contributes to his school behavior.

has your son ever had a hard time going to sleep and if so was there anything you found to help besides giving him medicine for it?

thanks

My son was on adderall and then they took it off the market in Canada.  He was on Adderall XR and it was great it lasts 12 hours compared to the medication he is on now which only last 6-8 hours.  So I recommend it!  It is back on the market in Canada so the doctor is talking about putting him back on it.  Good Luck!

my son has been taking adderall for awhile and it has helped him, but i was wondering does the extended relief work better?

we just raised his dose for the first time in 15 months, but now i am wondering if we should change to XR.

any suggestions?

thanks

Works the same just lasts longer. Guess it depends on how long it is lasting for him now.

Some people do really well on the regular dose and switching to XR brings up new issues like trouble sleeping. Some people switch because the regular dose doesn't last very long and it is frustrating to have to take a pill every few hours.

You really won't know until you try but there is a lot of merit to the "if it's not broke don't fix it" way of thinking.

The other thing is XR is unbelievably expensive so if you don't have insurance it could be an issue.

Love my jd:

My daughter is on Adderall as well, with good results, and my  pediatrician told me that once we were sure about the right dosage for her, she would switch her to the the XR extended release, mainly for two reasons :

                    1.  She would only have to take the pill 1x per day - in the morning before school - no meds at school.

                      2.  With the extended release, there is a more steady flow of the meds, not as much risk for "rebound".

my son 1st grade takes the extended release....this seems to work just fine for him and like the above posters we also lower the dosage for time away from school ( like spring break he was on half his normal dosage)
