Meds | ADHD Information

My ds is on Focalinxr in the morning and then a second dose of Focalin in the afternoon.  He seems to metabolize his meds so quick that now that is wearing off way before it should.  The meds have helped but this brings a whole new set of problems.  Does everyone have to keep adjusting every couple of months?  Does it ever stabilize?  I just get so tired of worrying. What kind of behaviors are you seeing? Who diagnosed him? Are you comfortable with an ADHD diagnosis. DO YOU REALLY HAVE EIGHT KIDS? lol! That gave me pause to think (grin) :)

Hi Older Mom,

Yes, we have 8 children.  Our first three are grown, two are married, one with a grandchild.  The last five are adopted from the state and are all maternal brothers.  The ages are 7, 5, 4, 3, and 21 months.  The oldest is adhd.

We really fought this diagnosis for some time thinking it was anxiety etc.  Some of his behaviors did improve with time and security.  But...he is still very impulsive, gets so hyper at times he looks mentally limited, barking etc.  He is very bright and when he is on his meds and they are working he is  pretty good.  On meds he can play creatively with toys, draw/color/make projects, plays the piano.  He couldn't take lessons before.  We are homeschooling him and he does all his work well.  Yesterday his meds wore off early and he asked for his next dose.  He couldn't control himself.

He also has had sleep issues.  He wakes every night to go to the bathroom and then many times can't go back to sleep.  The medication makes going to sleep impossible so he now takes clonidine to take the effects of the stimulant out.

He was diagnosed by a Phychiatrist.  I am comfortable with the dx.  I worried about bi polar but he doesn't have any of the major symptoms.  All five of the boys were drug exposed.  Well, three of the five are running through the house.

I am adding this comment after a long day (it;s only 3) of continuous arguing.  No matter what I say he counters, challenges or corrects.  I get so tired of the mental gymnastics.  Is this a symtom of adhd as well?!!!!
