The following quote is from a site for asperger's disorder. However, I could relate so closely to the description of learning social skills the way other people learn to play the piano. I am really starting to wonder if I may have some aspergers mixed in. Is this an asperger's only trait or is it also common to others who have ordinary add?
The children I have known do desire interaction with others but have trouble knowing how to make it work. They are, however, able to learn social skills much like you or I would learn to play the piano.
That's not Asperger-specific. We with ADHD also have trouble with social skills yet can mimic from trial and error. We can learn by trying things and "fake it". It's not true understanding of social skills and cues but rather a facimile we can create to get by.
A lot of us also have Aspergers along with ADHD. Aspergers is a form of Autism and can be characterized by specific symptoms like overly literal interpretations of things they are told. Example: "It's raining cats and dogs" can cause an Asperger's sufferer to look in the sky to expect seeing cats and dogs plummeting down on them. That and a very childlike innocence makes those with Aspergers seem gullible and almost simple though their IQ is average to high in most cases.
