Question, please help | ADHD Information

Wish I could help you, susib.  Good Luck! My son's learning disability (not dyslexia but a visual processing disability) was diagnosed by a regular old psychologist and then his school developed an IEP and then taught him how to work around it.  I've never heard of a neuropsych diagnosing issues like that but of course I am fairly new to neuropsych's (as of yet I have not been able to find one in my area).  It sounds like if she has a dx and an IEP with the school and is recieving extra help that should just about cover it.  I do know that Medicaid pays for almost all meds, and should pay for a dx from a psychiatrist for ADHD if that is suspected.  To be honest I can't really think of any other services that would be available for dyslexia besides what is already being done.  Are you looking for free Orton-Gillingham tutoring for dyslexia?  If so, the Scottish Rite is the first place I would check.  They do testing and remediation.

Our school system immediately brought in a Scottish Rites specialist via the 504 plan.    They worked with my son for 2 days per week - he went from not being able to read well in 1st grade, then repeated first grade and did dyslexia training and was reading at the 3rd grade level.   By 5th grade he didn't need the tutor anymore.   He's in 6th grade now & can read at a 9th grade level.

We live in Austin , TX - roundrock school system - excellent system.

I am doing a church project and in the middle of this I met a woman on disability who has a foster daughter in kindergarten.  She has a lot of issues, but one of the bigger problems is dyslexia.  She has an IEP and has always had one-on-one help in school.  She gets OT, Speech Therapy and several other services in school and that seems to have the school part covered.  Her social worker has never addressed the dyslexia and hasn't offered any resources (I don't know if she would have any).  The only doctor besides a pediatrician that's ever seen this child is someone at mental health but that's been sparse.  Is there anything I can do or recommend that would help?  The practice that ds was dxed at takes pro bono cases and I thought a dx from a neuropsych would help.  This woman has very few resources and doesn't want to put her child on meds if she can possibly help it.  I also don't know whether she could afford it or if medicaid would pay for them.  I don't know if she has internet access or not.  Please give any advice you can.  I want to try to do something for this family.  Maybe I'm misguided, but I would like to help. meds wont help dyslexia...does this child also have ADHD?I don't know if she's ADD (she's not hyper).  The reason I asked this question is not really about meds but I know that there are many people who come here who have experience with dyslexia. I hope you'll not only post advice, but also opinions.  Am I misguided.  My heart really goes out to this family.
