I WILL CALL MY CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL TOMORROW TO SEE HOW I GET IN. EVERYTHING IS DIFFICULT THERE.........WISH ME LUCK
Neuropsychs do hours (in my kids' cases, 8 hours over 2 days) of testing to assess the cognitive and psychological functioning of your child. Tests do include an IQ and achievement battery. They then write a report detailing their findings, their diagnoses and their recommendations for interventions. In our case, once the testing was completed, the neuropsych did not have a role in my children's care, except for occasional questions.
DO THEY TEST ALL AGES?? I CANT SEE MY 4 1/2 YEAR OLD GOING THROUGH 8 HOURS OF TESTING.
Today was our neuropsych. eval.
My son is 5. the tests took about 4-5 hours, I think is less for younger children for that reason. Maybe depends on each doctor.
I am in Texas and I was very impress with the knowledge and the explanations this Doctor gave us compared to the Psychiatrist we have been seeing.
Good luck
Sorry -- I didn't know your son was so young. Yes, as Michel72 posted, the testing takes fewer hours for younger kids. They also give breaks and snacks between tests. When you call around for appointments, ask how it is structured. Neuropsychs can be found at university and children's hospitals.
I found this site a few weeks ago, and I thought it was helpful:

WHAT TYPE OF TESTING DOES A NEUROPSYCH DO? WHAT ROLE DO THEY PLAY AFTER YOUR CHILD HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD?
We waited 2 weeks for 1st appt which she had to cancel so it took a month wait total. Her battery of tests is 4 hours but she knew we should not attempt more than an hour's worth at a time due to my input. Tomorrow is our last appt and tho trying to get out of work (in addition to 2 bouts of illness) was rather a pain, but my boss is really good about it.
We did IQ, achievement testing and started neuro-psych which will be completed tomorrow. Her philosophy isn't to focus on achieving certain scores, but rather in the qualitative results in the observation phase and seeing how he reacted to challenges and amounts of information.
