the IEP is evaluated and updated periodically. it's a good tool for setting reasonable goals for your child and holding the school accountable toward those goals. it's very specific in terms of what is "counted" as having met a goal.
my son has one for his ADHD (classified as "other medical impairment") and in order to achieve a goal in a given area, they enumerate the number of attempts he must succeed at (out of a benchmark) in order for him to be considered as passing that goal.
You can also go to the Wrightslaw website and check there for helpful information regarding adhd and IEP's.
I have the Wrightslaw books but I've had to advocate for my daughter since she was 3 and had to learn the law and her rights to a free appropriate public education.
There are numerous modifications that can be helpful for children with adhd.

An IEP stands for Individualized Education Plan. These are given to children who qualify for Special Education services under one of the following categories: communication disorders, learning disability, autism, other health impaired, traumatic brain injury, emotionally/behaviorally disturbed, deafness/blindness, and mental retardation (I think that's all of them). In order for a child to qualify for Special Education, one of the categories mentioned must impair the child's ability to learn. The IEP is a learning plan that has been formulated for your child that addresses how his/her disability is affecting his/her ability to learn and what modifications, accommodations, and interventions need to be incorporated that will allow your child to receive a free and appropriate educatio (FAPE) regardless of his/her disability. My son has an iep for speech. I am just curious. What kinds of things do others have in an iep to help with adhd? I do not think I truly understand what an iep is. I have read up on them, but it is not clicking.
Whoops! There also are early childhood and multiply disabled. I think that's all, but if someone here can come up with another....i think you pretty well covered it Lillian.
