getting a neuropsych eval | ADHD Information

After reading post after post from this forum about how highly you recommend getting a neuropsych eval I have been looking into it.  I found a local doctor that can do one and am waiting to hear the wait time.  Should I ask him specific questions?  Most of you went through a university or childrens hospital is it okay to go through just a local doc?  He is a specialty doctor in neurology but if I have to go through this and put my ds through it I want to make sure I get it done right the first time.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!!

What are his qualifications?  Does he have a PhD in psychology plus extra training in neurology?

For my children's neuropsych testing, we actually didn't go through a university or children's hospital (although lots of parents do).  We went through a private firm that specializes in neuropsych testing.  If you want to take a look at the firm's website, it's www.stixrud.com.

Hope that helps.

Thanks SmallMom,

I called and asked more questions about his credentials and he seems to specialize in PDD for kids of all ages.  He even has a support group for helping with social skills.  I looked at the website you gave me and he is pretty much following the exact same protocol as your doc.  Wish us luck!!

Good luck, the waits can be long for such testing and the wait for the results can seem to drag out, but its worth it.  Make sure when they give you a diagnosis they also give you a plan for the school.  Something with recommendations on it for the school to modify your childs learning environment and or special classes for your child. That will help you mold an IEP or 504 plan for your child when you start the battle with the school.  The school will require the documentation showing diagnosisin order to consider either option.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!
