HELP- Northern IL- Behavioral Classes | ADHD Information

Share
I live in Northern Illinois and our school district helped but we ended up going to the pediatric place in libertyville because our insurance paid for it.  We are also going to behavioral therapy in Evanston once every two weeks. What district are you in? My son was in foster care when we first got him so he already had services from Cook County. We were in McHenry. I think all school districts HAVE to provide it...Your school district should have something. My son started Early Education at age 3. He was in Early Childhood Therapy before then, paid for by the county. And, at that time, I lived in Illinois so I know it's available by law if the child meets the criteria. OlderMom38846.6093402778My school district is horrible.  They refused to provide help when he was 3 so I took him to private OT.  I asked the school for help this year (in kdg) and they don't offer anything until 1st grade.  I asked about other sources that they may know of and they told me NO!!!  The only answer they keep giving me is to take Jimmy to the pediatrician and get him on meds ASAP before the school year is over (6/5/06) so they can see progress....  I am totally frustrated with the school district.    Lillian gave me some insight and the Yellow Pages for Kids with Disabilities lists a ton of stuff so I emailed a few people and waiting to hear back from them...  Check with your state chapter of the Learning Disabilities Association and with CHADD. Also, check the wrightslaw.com website and check under "Yellow Pages for Kids with Disabilities."  Good luck! lillian38846.3436342593

I am in the far north suburbs of Illinois and I am trying to locate any type of social skill classes, Behavioral therapy, Play therapy, etc for my 5 year old son?  A lot of places that I have called do not offer it for this age group.  Does anyone have any advice on how I can locate these groups?  THANKS.

Everyone is agreeing to disregard the school, bypass the pediatrician and go directly to a neuropsych....  which is what we are doing for further testing and a correct diagnosis.   And, Lilian, thanks- good suggestion on the adoption agency referral- I will need to research that too!

Oldermom- I am in Libertyville school district- #70- Copeland school.  They say they offer social skills/ friendship circles, etc but ONLY for 1st grade and beyond.  They will not offer him anything in kdg.  School ends 6/5 so I stopped pushing now...  I requested OT but they keep pushing for the pediatrician to put him on meds..  He is not getting any type of one on one with the social worker, OT, or child psychologist, but they claim that next year- he will get help!

Chicago Father- We did the same- Lib. Pediatric Place and saw great results for one on one sessions for OT for sernsory issues.  However, I need some group therapy now- whether it is group social skills, behavioral therapy, play therapy, etc.  I called Pediatric Place and they said they don't offer that...  Would you be willing to share the name of the place in Evanston with me?  I could possibly call them and see what they offer?  I am looking for anything to help change his aggressive behavior when he plays with other children...  thanks.

When my son was in foster care, he was in group therapy.  He was in second grade, though.  Do you have a large adoption agency that helps CPS with adoption?  If so, you may want to call this agency and see if they have anything because they deal with this issue everyday.  They have to teach the kids social skills before they can find families who will take them.  It is your decision to put your child on meds or not,not the school, and if he has other things going than ADHD like bipolar, meds won't help,it will make him worst,so you have to wait for the dx and the school can stuff it.
