Getting son to take a pill? | ADHD Information

There are a few good websites on how to teach a young child to swallow pills.  I'm sure someone can bring the link here for you.

Most of them talk about practicing with candy the same size as the pill (round would be chocolate buds or other, oval can be tic tac or good n' plenty.  That way you know they'll love it and get used to the idea of washing it down with water.  I've also seen it surrounded with banana or other equally slick soft substance and spoon feeding so he won't have to chew.

So - anyone with the link?!?

We fill a spoon with apple sauce and stick the pill inside.  He swallows the spoonful and the pill all at once.  It works wonderfully!

how would xenu's little alien worker like being in bizarro's body?? Hmmm...

So far this nasty smelly troll has attacked the helpless, the helpful, the scared, the tired, informed AND uninformed newbies - have I missed a category?

Making blanket statements that binformed is so blatently ignorant about makes him/her neutered and simply pathetically laughable.

Sticks and stones troll - sticks and stones.

L. Ron Hubbard called via ouija board - he wants his tyrannical sci-fi rantings back.

don't give your son that damn pill....he doesn't want it, and your gonna hurt him.  don't believe the doctors - search out the truth!.IMac38947.4067824074
Bin there, done that?
this is just bazaar.  lmao.IMac38947.407025463Hi, My 6yr.old son just started taking Concerta 18mg this morning.  Does anyone have any suggestions for him in taking a pill?  He has never taken a pill before, and we wasted 5 pills this morning and about 45 minutes trying to get him to swallow the pill.  He keeps gagging even though it is a small pill.  Don't know what to do.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello MJCulber, I really know how you feel. My little boy is 7 and has just started on concerta also. We had a really hard time getting him to take it. We managed it for 3 days using yogurt, a pasta tube, and even tried butter, lemonade (I know fizzy drinks aren't good for our kids but someone suggested to me that the capsule may just go down with the bubbles so to say). But after 3 days he refused point blank to even try, and would hide away and hold his mouth tight shut. To cut a long story short things have got really bad at school and I felt desperate. So after a long and difficult talk with him he finally seemed to accept that his days will be better if he takes his tablet. He's been on the 18mgs for a week and we just went up to 36mgs today. I know it's very early days but we've noticed an immediate improvement. He has played a game of skittles today at school with the other kids and could actually join in properly without destroying the game and ending up rejected. Hang on in there, I really hope you manage it and that it helps.

PS I'm a newbie to the forum too.

I used Tic Tac's with my son, orange of course.  Worked like a charm.

we practiced with the small candies that you use to decorate cakes ...we just practiced  a bit everyday and finally he got it...my son is 6 now and can swallow just about any pill..

I did a google search for swallowing pills and I came up with lots of different web sites

Good luck let us know how it goes

Hi, my son is almost 10 years old and has been taking Concerta 18mg for approximately 9 months.  He takes his pill in a small scoop of  smooth peanut butter every morning.  It has worked every time, mostly b/c peanut butter is a food that requires almost no chewing.  Hope this will work for you too.

It is ignored due to too long to read who has all day.  I do not have ADD but lost interest too long of post.

As for the topic swalling pills I do not have much advice for  my daughter picked up on it quickily.  She hates chew tabs and liquid and refuses them so when we introduced pills she jumped on it and there is no going back.  My daughter is proud of herself for she can swallow without water.  I insist she drink afterwards of course.

That's VERY helpful anti.  Really.

Putting that cut-and-paste lie up everywhere shows you don't want to help - you just want to be heard.

Now you're ignored.
