Crawling survey | ADHD Information

I'd be interested in the survey here too.

My Adhd son was a good crawler and walked at about 12 mos.

Dylan never crawled. He pulled himself for a few weeks, then started walking. He was walking on his own, without needing to hold onto things, by 10 months .

But he's not solely ADHD, so I don't know how much that helps you. We always thought he was a monkey in a previous life

I tried doing a search, as you say it's probably been around before, but hopefully can get some feedback from some newer posters too.  My search function here always times out~it's useless.

Thanks for your feedback Imac.  Everyone in my family did not crawl well.  Figures.  Neither did anyone I know or have asked, that has ADHD crawled well.

calicorose38848.5531712963My ADD son never crawled very well, he just kind of scooted forward in a sitting position. And he walked late, about 13 months.
And my non-ADD son never crawled either: he literally went from lying there like a lump until 9.5 months, then got up and ran. Scary. He's still got more coordination than the rest of the family put together. It's not fair!!

I am so fascinated by the connection of ADHD and a crawling deficiency in babyhood I am wondering if many of the ADHDers here on this board, your children, or those you know with ADHD, did not craw well, not long enough (6-8 months), improperly, etc.  I know I did not.

Thanks for any input you can provide!

My oldest who is ADHD...possibly bipolar/possibly depressed (working on figuring it out) did everything right on schedule exactly the way the textbooks tell you it should be.

My youngest who will be two in a couple weeks army crawled for forever (he started early), and then pulled up and started cruising.  He finally got up on all fours to crawl at about 10.5 months and walked two weeks later.  Of course, there's no way to tell yet whether he will be ADHD, but he does have language delays and possibly more so we will see.  It's an interesting theory and I was telling someone the other day how I had read about it on this board.  I'm curious to read more responses.

My son started walking and climbing (and falling) out of his crib when he was 9 months old .. he never crawled.  He was in a toddler bed by the time he was 10 months old. The doctors didn't believe me .. then again they dismissed most things I told them up until he started school.  My son also has other things going on other than adhd .. just not dx yet.  I'm sure of it..IMac38945.3481481482My son didn't learn to crawl until 10 months and didn't walk until 16 1/2 months. So yes, he was a good crawler, just took him a long time to get there.

Rebecca did everything in the so called "normal" timeframe, sitting, crawling, walking. She started walking shortly after her 1st b-day.

Jacob never crawled, he scooted army-style, and that as far as I remember fairly late. He used the handles on drawers as a ladder, to get onto the kitchen  counter, before he could walk. Why am I saying walk? From the moment he was on his two feet, he was running. Even now at 6, I hardly see him "walk". He runs, skips, jumps ect.

Stopwhinig, is Jacob your ADHDer then?  Do you see a connection?

Yes, Jacob is adhd and odd, he is extremly hyper. Until he started meds he couldn't even watch tv for 5min. He's on Adderall xr now.

Rebecca is add, she was dx shortly after Jacob. She started 2nd gr. with A's and B's, by christmas she had D's and F's on her grade card. I went to talk to her teacher and she told me how she behaves in school, no behavior problems ( in school ), but the unable to concentrate, daydreaming an so on. Then she mentioned if I had thought about the poss. her having add. I started to laugh and explain her that Jacob just got dx with adhd and through his therapist we found out that I have add, also. I took her to be tested, and since aug. 2005 they both are on Adderall XR. Rebecca is 3rd gr. now and had A's and B's all year.

I volunteer in the school library on fridays after work, and the librarian has two children with adhd, from her I heard for the first time about the connection between not crawling and adhd.

wow, look at the time! got to get ready for work!

Hi, I am new here.  My 6 year old son has ADHD and who knows about my 3 year old little girl.  This is a very interesting thread as I have just read a book about ADHD, Dyspraxia etc which claims that most of these are symptoms of a developmental delay; one sign is no crawling or delayed crawling.  However, my son did crawl but did it over and over, around and around the dining room table or chair which I thought a bit odd!

What finally made me post was I was curious about a link between assisted births {(forceps, ventouse (vacuum, I think in the US?)}as well as traumatic births and ADHD.  This book claims that there is a higher incidence of ADHD/dyspraxia/Tourette's symptoms etc with assisted/traumatic births.  I had coffee with 2 friends who have special boys like my son and both of them had traumatic ones just like me.  Does this correspond with any one else's experience?

I look forward to hearing from anyone.  All the best.

I don't know if I am allowed to post the name of the book.  If I can, I am happy to put it on here.

You all may have read my posts about myself, but for the newbies:

I did not crawl as a baby because I had casts on my legs and then a bar between my shoes until I was of walking age.  So, I just walked after that. I was dx with ADD inattentive at age 40.

My oldest son, who shows many signs of ADHD but will not admit to it, walked early, around 9 to 10 months.

My second oldest son had a forceps, vacuum dilivery.  He crawled a lot.  He doesn't show many signs of ADD.  His room is neat as a pin.

My youngest was born 5 years after the rest of the kids.  He walked fairly late, but he did not do much crawling.  His brothers and sisters spoiled him rotten.  He only had to point and grunt and they would bring him anything he wanted.  He mostly sat on a blanket and was spoiled.  He shows some signs of ADD, but not severe.

The theory in the book Stopping ADHD is that you have to crawl properly for 6 months in order to mature the reflex called the STNR.  If this reflex is not matured, problems can affect you in your life.

Another thing that can affect people is if walkers, strollers, playpens, etc were used too much.   This, according to the book, can also stop the STNR from maturing.  The child does not get enough of an opportunity to crawl.

I do believe that other things can cause ADHD.  But I also believe that in many cases the STNR is a main concern.  I know since I have been crawling, doing the exercises in the book, I have improved in so many areas.  It has been a wonderful path for me.

nandgmum:  Traumatic births when the baby is forcefully pulled out, either vaginally or by cesarian, often result in some spinal subluxations, particularly cervical, that would benefit from some gentle chiropractic care.  I have a thread posted on the Alternatives section on the benefits of chiropractic.  I have seen children have some wonderful results with chiropractic care.  Check out the thread if you are interested.

My biological son had forceps and my labor was induced, but he does not have ADHD. He also wore special shoes so he couldn't exactly crawl or walk because a bar held his feet in a certain position. He DID leap exactly like a frog, on his knees...lol. And, because of a bar that he wore that connected his  shoes, he didn't walk until 15 months. No ADHD or LD's of any sort though. My sister's twins were preemies and she had a traumatic birth. They are now 14, gifted in school, in all accelerated classes, one is a great athlete, the other is a gifted dancer, good kids...Brady Bunch stuff...they walked at nine months too. No problems. My son was an excellent crawler from age 9 months and he is Adhd. My daughter never really crawled but rahter pulled herself along on her elbows and she is not Adhd. My son was extremely active in utero so I believe he came into this world having Adhd and I had no complications during pregancy or delivery. He woudlnt stay in his stroller, playpen or walker. He was a man on the move
How about "Man In Motion"?
I like that phrase even better Imac. Thanks

Brandon was born with the assistance of the vacumn. He learned to crawl at 6 or 7 months. He walked at 13 months. He is ADHD.

My daughter crawled at about 8 months, but would extend her right leg straight out to the side and push off (as if to go faster).  She did this for about 2 months until she began walking, then went directly to running.  I am not really sure as to what age I began crawling.

ok, i'm in on this thread.

i am adhd - crawled for about 6 months but walked at 11 months (i crawled and walked around the same time frames)

my son spider crawled at 3 1/2 months, walked at 6 months and was running like h*ll at 10 months.  I joke that i have birth to a 3 month old.  When he was born, he could hold his head up, follow his hands (motion and sinces were advanced as if he were 3 months) and had a head of hair at birth.  He had reflux so bad that we had to put him on cereal when he was 2 weeks old.  I asked my son's neuropsy and his p doc about STNR and they both laughed at me, and told me that has nothing to do with his adhd.  My son has it from me and it didn't help that they had to give me albuteral (sp) for 4 months to prevent pre term labor.

I HAVE A SEVEN YEAR OLD SON(ADHD) & A THREE YEAR OLD SON(ADHD) NEITHER OF THE TWO CRAWLED AT ALL INCREDIBLY THEY BOTH WENT FROM SITTING UP TO WALKING,RUNNING,CLIMBING, AND JUMPING OFF OF THINGS.SEVEN WALKED AT 6.5 MONTHS AND THREE WALKED AT 6 MONTHS IT WAS SCARY AND THE ODD THING IS I HAVE A NINE YEAR OLD GIRL AND A FIVE YEAR OLD GIRL WHO ARE NON ADHD THAT CRAWLED NORMALLY THENWALKED AT 15 MONTHS AND 13 MONTHS

To much on this subject. Neither of our kids crawled for a long time. 1 has disabilties other is fine. Boys are 3 times more likey to be spotted for disabilities than girls cause is seems more apparent in boys. Girls are over looked more often than boys.

Girl has always did stuff easily and early.

Son has developed slower than sis.
