Interrupting at school | ADHD Information

Did you ever see an improvement with the Concerta?  Has she been on any other meds?  It is common to have to raise the doseage of Concerta after a while.

There is no medication for bossiness, unfortunately. How does she get along with her peers aside from that? My son, Dylan, is overly bossy, thinks he's the father here at home, and always worried about what other children are doing in the classroom. We're doing therapy, social skills classes and I have a Youth Advocate that takes him in the community to work on peer relations with him. I wish there was a pill LOL!

Hi, I am new and have a daughter who is on 18 mg Concerta daily (I think—minimum dosage).  She is first grader and very intelligent.  Her biggest problem is interrupting and bossiness.  I do not know if her dosage is not enough or we need more behavior therapy.  Thanks for ideas.

Do you have a psychologist you are working with?  Ours gave us a behavior plan to use.  Can the school psychologist or social worker help develop one that is part of their jobs.Concerta wears off after a while of using it consistantly.  You need to raise her dose to 27 and see how she does.  What you should do is continue giving her the 18 on weekends, and then you should see consistant results.  By lowering the dose on the weekends you'll help the 27mgs remain effective during the week.  I bet once she is on the correct dose you'll see her impulsiveness diminish dramatically.

mali ignore this boy.

He is 14 and a child of scientologists.  He gets all his info exclusively from a scientology-paid page ritalindeath.org.  they want all meds for everything gone even if they see all children suffer and die (all non-scientologists anyway).  They'd like that they say.

He's a liar and just needs to be left alone.

CONCERTA IS CANCEROUS CHICKY.  GET YOUR KID OFF THAT CRAP FAST WHATEVER YOU DO.  CHECK OUT RITALIN...CONCERTA IS RITALIN.  CHECK OUT CHROMOSOMAL CHANGES, CHECK OUT THE TEXAS STUDY..ALL 12 KIDS HAD SIGNIFICANT CHROMOSOMAL CHANGES AFTER A SHORT TIME...THAT'S GENETIC DAMAGE FOLKS, HELLO?

http://www.ritalindeath.com/New-Federal-Law.htm Schools Can't Require ADHD Drugs National Alliance against Mandated Drugging of Children is thrilled Congress Passes Bill That Says Schools Can't Make Drug Treatment Mandatory.

U.S. House overwhelmingly passed a bill 407-12 barring schools from requiring hyperactive children to use drug treatments as a condition for attending classes.

This bill was designed to curb reports of school officials telling parents that disruptive kids must begin drug treatment for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in order to attend school.

National Alliance against Mandated Mental Health Screening & Psychiatric Drugging of Children is a caring organization dedicated to informing the public about ADHD and other psychiatric conditions often misdiagnosed because of underlying health conditions and learning differences which are often overlooked.

Many times if a child is having difficulties, the school will be quick to do a psychological evaluation which can lead to a mental diagnosis and psychotropic medications.

This has caused many children to be misdiagnosed with a psychiatric diagnosis which requires lethal psychotropic medications.

Doctors often rely on teachers to identify disruptive behaviors in class they feel can be signs of ADHD - attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We feel it is only fair that a child suffering from underlying health conditions and learning differences are checked out by a professional and that the issues at hand be addressed.

What many teachers don’t realize is there are many underlying health conditions and learning differences often misdiagnosed as an subjective disorder like ADHD.

A few common underlying health conditions and learning differences often misdiagnosed as ADHD are food allergies, hidden food sensitivities, preservatives & food dyes.

Some spinal problems can cause ADHD like symptoms because if the spine is not connected to the brain properly nerves from the spinal cord can give the brain all of signals at once making a child rambunctious and always on the go.

Children are misdiagnosed because of hearing problems like middle ear infections or auditory processing disorder.

Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist and/or Audiologist: Because ear, nose and throat infections can affect a child's ability to learn - and because signs of hearing loss often impact listening and attention behaviors - an ENT Specialist or Audiologist may be called upon to rule out non-ADHD problems.

Children who have had a history of ear infections or chronic middle ear fluid are at a higher risk for having difficulties in auditory perception and processing.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), previously known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is often misunderstood because it can be confused with certain learning disabilities and ADHD.

It has been found in past research that psychostimulants cause brain atrophy - (Shrinkage) they have tried to prove the difference between a normal brain and an ADHD brain based on This theory.

The research failed to reveal the truth because those with brain atrophy had used psychostimulants prier to the research and the damage was already done.

If your child has never been exposed to psychostimulants like Ritalin, there would be no atrophy and chances are your child would be considered to have a normal brain by a neurologist which would rule out ADHD.

Some Osteopathic Physicians are dedicated to finding the underlying health conditions and learning differences often misdiagnosed as ADD and ADHD.

Nutritional deficiencies or excessive amounts of vitamins can be toxic to the body.
Iron deficiency: Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the oxygen carrying pigment in the blood. Iron is normally obtained through the food in the diet and by the recycling of iron from old red blood cells. The causes of iron deficiency are too little iron in the diet, poor absorption of iron by the body, and loss of blood. It is also caused by lead poisoning in children.

B vitamin deficiencies: Many experts believe that one of the main causes for inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, temper tantrums, sleep disorders, forgetfulness, and aggression are caused by faulty neurotransmissions a problem with the neurotransmitters in the brain. Vitamin B-6 is a necessary vitamin used in the making of neurotransmitters that affect behavior. A lack of this vitamin or really any other vitamin can cause a child to act inappropriately.

Excessive amounts of Vitamins: Excessive amounts of vitamins can be toxic to the body and may cause the same ADHD like symptoms. It is possible to overdose when taking vitamins so make sure you contact a physician and check for vitamin deficiencies before taking extra vitamins.

If your child is struggling or just not being challenged enough, Find a learning center that can identifying your child's specific needs and create a personalized program just for your child, with highly trained and certified teachers that work with your child individually, so your child receives the specific help he or she needs.

We have a law called the HIPAA law; Medical issues should be privet family matter.

I feel schools should stick to academics, and if a parent or guardian is duped into believing in a subjective diagnoses like ADHD it's personal.

If an educated parent or guardian prefers to find the real cause of their child’s difficulty rather than masking it with lethal, addictive psychotropic drugs, that’s their choice.

We like many other parents and guardians have been coerced into starting our children on these mind Altering drugs.

Our son’s school social worker told my wife and I if we refused to compile with their evaluation of ADHD and take our seven year old son to the doctor for Ritalin, that we could be charged by child protective services for neglecting his educational and emotional needs.

Some school officials even attempt to force parents into choosing between medicating their children as a prerequisite to attending class, this is criminal.

Nearly 4 million U.S. children under age 17 had been diagnosed with ADHD by 2004, according to the CDC.

Doctors wrote more than 5.6 million prescriptions for Adderall a drug used to treat ADHD during the first six months of 2005. That's a 15% increase over the same period a year before, according to IMS Health, a pharmaceutical information and consulting company.

That’s just Adderall alone, I don’t know the stats on all the other similar drugs like Ritalin and concerta.

Many parents and guardians have made complaints to legislators in Washington.

I personally went from room too room telling our story about how we were coerced into drugging our son with Ritalin.

And the fact that our 14-year-old son's death death certificate stats his death was caused from the use of Ritalin prescribed for ADHD.

It is unknown how often schools have tried to make medication a condition of attending class.

Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) says the House Education and Workforce Committee, which he leads, have received a number of complaints" from parents.

I would like to say to Rep. John Boehner, Thank you with all my heart for keeping your promise to me of perusing this very important issue of the forced drugging of so many American children.

This will not bring my son Matthew Smith back or all the other normal children that have died, but this new law will save the lives of many children and cut back on future drug addicts.

Mali,

I truly feel that interrupting and bossiness will probably get her a great corporate job in the future.  My family has just begun to balance on this dangerous medication wire, and I would hope that the quest is to make life easier for the children, not necessarily for those who interact with the children.  I'm so sensitive to using meds to edit out bothersome personality traits rather than promote self-control that I strongly advise against looking at meds as a way to change these two relatively harmless traits.

The teacher needs to use a non-verbal sign every time she interrupts, like crossed fingers, or the peace sign.

It's perfectly natural to be concerned with meds in general - and adding them as well.

If you have trusted your doc so far and haven't seen adverse reactions to meds when he takes them (anxiety, jitters, etc.), I'd say there should be no major worries.  Just watch him and be aware of any changes.

Keeping the meds through the weekend is seen in some as having a beneficial effect in social interactions in home and play.  Also it can be helpful with any homework being done then.  It does smooth out the dosage and there is no major up or down from removing then adding them abruptly.  Then you'd have him take a med holiday about every 2 to 3 months.

Thanks Hawks 2921, my son is exactly the same if we try weekends off his concerta. We see symptoms we never saw before. Maybe I will try cutting the dose also at weekends and see if that helps. His teachers say his concentration and focus is still varied at school. His doc has told me to add in ritilan 10 mg in the morning also, but I'm a bit reluctant to add more drugs (he did start on ritilan and was ok on it, I just worry I'll keep having to add more drugs as time goes on) Am I being over anxious?

OMG! My son Ewan sounds exactly like your daughter! He is a beautiful, charming 6 yr old (who is in K, because he was late diagnosed so I held him back) who is on Concerta 27 mgs, and is very very bossy! He is constantly interupting in class. He has told me he doesn't have any friends, and that really makes him sad (it's because of being bossy). So what they do in school is for every day he is good he gets a happy face. If he gets 3 happy faces in a row, he gets to go to the "store" which is little cheapy toys and whatnots. If he is naughty, he gets a sad face. He is trying though. I have him in a group therapy thing (with other kids his age) and they are teaching them about bounderies with people, etc...he loves it. Right now we are having problems with back talk, ugh! I'm so excited to have found this site.

Hi, Senior Member,

Thanks so much about Concerta.  I had the feeling that when my daughter was off the weekend, or or for a while, she responded to Concerta on Monday the best and kind of wear off the later week.  She used to be able to not take COncerta on Wednesday and had the rest of week ok after resting one day on Concerta.  She is doing ok weekends at home so I am trying not to give her any meds over weekend even we raise her dosage to 27 mg during weekday when in school, hope it will work that way?

You can try giving 27 during the week and nothing on the weekends, but for me, it didn't work well with my son.   When taking the stimulants, sometimes you'll see increased hyperactivity if they don't have it for a day.  So you may start seeing more behavior difficulties on Saturdays, then when you go back on Monday you may notice that she's a little cranky.  If that happens, then give a lower dose on weekends to help her overcome that rebound effect and also help her behavior at home.

You may not have had that issue when she was on 18 mgs, since it is such a low dose.  However, when you start increasing the dose you may then notice the hyper behavior when she misses a day.

Please let me know how she does.

Hi, Newbie and Senior member,  Thanks for the replies.  I was laughing out loud when I read Newbie's email about corporate jobs.  Our psycologist did say my daughter can be future superium court justice!  but she needs a pair of glasses (concerta) to help her.  We just went to see our Pschytrist, who said 27 mg can be tried when she goes to second grade in Sept, but she said my daughter can be a little mature to control those impulses by then too.  We probably will try 27 mg Concerta in August to see if there is any side effects.  Indeed, we have seen her maturing throughout years, especially compare to kindergarden.  Huge difference!  so, Newbie, there is hope!!!  She has more friends now, partially I try really hard to get her plenty playdates whenever I have time, even though I have to make the phone calls and get rejections from other moms.

Is it true that Concerta wears off during the week? I've had my daugher on 54mg for about 2 months, after going through 3 years of hell with sprinke capsules, liquid Adderall and anything else that might work. She gets daily progress reports from her teacher and has gone up to 2 weeks with a "perfect score", then for no reason at all, can go 2 days with terrible reports. What's that caused from? When she misses a pill (from lying, sneaking etc.) you can tell the difference in her mood/attitude within 30 min. or so, but that's not the same as when she actually does take it and it doesn't seem to be working the same as the day or two before.

Thanks for all the good ideas!  My daughter's school social worker started her in a social group about bossiness:)  We also use reward system and take away her points when she interrupts or bossy.  Concerta definitely helps, esp early the week.  I know she may be due to increase concerta as her side effects of not eating well seems gone.  When she misses a dosage, she has ourburst in school and goes around to "supervise" everyone without getting her own work done!  I have an appointment to see doctors.

I might also try GLuten free diet in the summer--any one tried it yet?
