frusterated with medsI am new to this but I found thisweb site and I thought I would check it out. My son has been on medication for two years for ADHD and to me it doesn't see to be working. To me he seems no different on it then without it. I don't know what to do, the new medicine that he is on is adderall xr aandhe hates the way it makes him feel. I have tried to tell his doctor put he doesn't listen. So I am getting a referal to a childrens hosptal to see a different doctor. But who knows how long that will take. I want to stop the medicine right now but a not sure if he should be tappered off. To me my son is just a typical 9 year old boy that has a lot of energy. I don't know i am just frusterated!!! Hello Thank you for the advice. I went to the doctor and am having him tappered off of his medication. It will take about 3 monthes to get it completely out of his system and we will see how he does. Hopefully well. Thank you Missy missmace, if you feel this way about your son, you very well could be right, he may not have adhd. The only way you will figure it out is if you give him time off his meds. Have courage and discuss the course of withdrawing his meds. I believe you will probably just cut them by half for a week and then none after that. Personally, if I felt my son did not need medication I would stop them. But you will only know if they are helping him, by going with out them for a week or two.
Please do not take my advice as fact, it is only my opinion, talk to your doctor first, and if you are not happy with his opinion, get a second opinion. Hi there Miss Mace- DEFINITELY take your son to another doctor...a BIG CLUE is that you said your son "doesn't like the way he feels on the Adderall"...since people withOUT ADHD feel jittery and irritable on the medicine and people WITH ADHD feel calm and focused, your son probably doesn't even have ADHD. Please know that you are giving him (perhaps experimentally even) a very potent amphetamine. I am a therapist that works with many ADHD kids and I myself have Adult ADD with no hyperactivity...your number ONE way of knowing if your child really has ADHD or not is whether or not the ADHD symptoms occur in ALL areas of your son's life. In other words, they must interefere with school performance, home life, on the ball field, out playing with friends, etc. TRUE ADHD does NOT occur in only one or two of those circumstances. There is no way for him to shut off and on his symptoms if it's truly what he has. Think about that and keep a log if you can and then go with your GUT! Us moms are good at that! I have to reply to this message not referring to your original message but because of your last name.............it is the same as mine. I don't see many mace's out there! Am I in the wrong "message board" :)
Hope all is well with your son!
