ADHD/CAPD

Does anyone have any info. on adhd and capd? My son will be tested for capd and the end of the month. I was wondering if they are so similar that it is easy to mistake the two. My son will be 8 and has been taking meds. for adhd since first grade. Any info. I can get would be great

Yes, My son has this and he still has the same accomidations as add or adhd kids get. He does get Language therapy. His ot will not continue he scores to high now. Many with this have a add or adhd labels. It is bascially auditory dyslexia from what I read on line about it. It is caused do to a Brain lag. The hearing is fine but the processing is muffled so the brain doesn't get  it all. The person's brain doesn't pick up all that is said. Hope this helps.

People with ear problems are known to have bee dx with this! why unknown.

Educating staff on processing issues waist of time. I have sent emails to staff on this. This why I think a NP is going to get pd by our SE coop. I got the psychologist to referr us. Still waiting on his referral.

Age 8 best time for dx on this. Younger to soon.

Hope helped ya!

YES YOU DID HELP ME.  IF YOU DON'T MIND I HAVE A FEW MORE QUESTIONS?

DOES YOU SON WEAR A HEARING DEVICE IN SCHOOL? IF SO HOW DOES HE FEEL ABOUT THAT? RIGHT NOW MY SON HAS ACCOMIDATIONS FOR ADHD AND ALSO O.T.

I HAVE DONE READING ON THIS AND THAT IS THE IMPRESSION I GOT WAS AUDITORY DYSLEXIA.

THANKS AGAIN

twingle9098,

There are behavioral characteristics that differentiate between ADHD and CAPD. Children with ADHD have a higher incidence of hyperactivity, restlessness, impulsivity, interruptions and intrusions. Children with CAPD are more likely to show difficulty hearing in background noise, difficulty following directions, poor listening skills and poor auditory association skills. Children with CAPD typically show distractibility and inattentiveness during tasks with significant auditory demands while children with ADHD show inattentiveness across more situations.

It takes a highly knowledgeable clinician who is trained to make a differential diagnosis as both may look alike in many ways but there is a significant distinction. Also, both disorders could co exist. Good luck with your sons testing and please keep us posted

NO HEARING DEVICE. THE NOISE IS WHAT DISTRACTS HIM SINCE ALSO HAS SENSITIVE HEARING.

My son went to the audiologist and she found he a minimal hearing loss. Now we are off to ear, nose and throat specalist. She told us usually these hearing losses are repairable. She found the loss in his left middle ear. She could not finish the test so until he is seen by this doctor it is a waiting game.

Thanks if their is a minimal loss you need to let the school staff know this also. Does your child get St? Daniel has had tubes, tonsills removed, adnoids removed.
