TENEX? | ADHD Information

My son has been taking Tenex for ADHD about 2 years & it works fine.  After many attempts at stimulant medications w/ severe side affects, this was the only medication that he could tolerate without losing weight or hallucinating.

My 8 year old son took Tenex for a couple of months but it seemed to make him drowsy during the day, he was 4.  He has been taking Clonodine at night for the past two years (to help him sleep) and it has been working wonderfully.

My son is taking Tenex and Focalin combination, he developed a eye twitch and barely any appetite on another medication. We took him off f it because he is so small and only forty pounds. So the dR. put him on this combination, his outbursts aren't as bad as they were but now his twitching is becoming more throughout his body and.  Isaw on another sight, which I cannot find now, that tenex can cause involuntary muscular twitches, even Tourette syndrome.  I am scared that I am using my son as a lab rat for these people who are not really sure how to fix the problem.  My son and I are constantly fighting. He's only seven

MY SON IS HAVING TROUBLE GETTING UP AND FUNCTIONING WELL IN THE MORNINGS, THE DOCTOR HAS PRESCRIBED HIM TENEX.5 mg BEFORE BED.

SHE SAID IT WAS A BEHAVIORAL MEDICATION AND WE WOULD RECHECK IN 2 WEEKS TO SEE IF IT HAD HELPED.  WHEN I GET THE PRESCRIPTION FILLED IT SAYS IT IS FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. ANYONE KNOW WHY?

HE HAS ADHD AND HAS BEEN OM ADDERALL FOR 4 YEARS(VARIOUS DOSES).

My son is on Tenex, and it has worked very well for him.  It works to calm hyperactivity and impulsivity by relaxing the smooth muscles.  Clonidine is in the same family, but it is more sedating and has a shorter life, than Tenex.  This is why Clonidine is used for sleep, not to control hyperactivity and impulsivity.  Like all ADHD meds, it works in different ways for different kids because ADHD is not just one thing.  Tenex slows the heart rate and is a blood pressure medication that is used off-label for things such as sleep. Some psychiatrists use it for ADHD symptoms. Whether it works or not is "iffy" but lots of kids take it.

Yep, oldermom is right, it's not specifically an ADHD medication. It is for blood pressure.

Dylan took Tenex twice - once when he was 3, and again when he was 7. At 3, he was on .5 mg once a day. It zombified him. He was comatose through most of the day. Then when he took it at 7, it didn't do anything  Go figure?

Clonodine is the other, that is in the same family as Tenex, that is prescribed as well. It usually helps with sleep issues.

My other son, who has congenital heart disease, is on blood pressure meds. Doesn't keep him calm either.

My son started Tenex Alittle over a week ago, img at night and his teacher said he's much more focused and less hyper.  It made him sleepy the first couple of nights, but now he's fine.
