Even though the appointment isn't until July 10, i'm still excited! For those that have already been through this, during the evaluation, what type of questions will they ask my son? Are parents allowed to observe at all? When i was on the phone with the staff at Nemours, i forgot to ask if my son would need to be on his ADHD medication...does anyone know, will he need to be on meds that day?
Thanks for your help!
A neuropsych evaluation is generally many hours (for my kids 8 hours over 2 days) of both pencil-and-paper tests plus computer and performance testing. The evaluation should include an IQ test (typically WISC-IV) and an achievement test (typically Woodcock-Johnson) plus lots and lots of others. Parents generally wait in the waiting room.
You should call back and ask whether they want him to take his meds that day.
Neuropsychologists do not do MRIs or EEGs because they are not medical doctors. Neurologists, who are medical doctors, generally order these tests. The TOVA is a computerized test that measures attention. Ogram, are you sure you didn't see a neurologist? My son had twelve hours of intense testing for every disorder on the face of the earth--I doubt any tests were passed up. I had to fill in several forms too. It was very intensive with me not getting any info until doctor was finished. I did not sit in with son. Psych felt this would affect his performance. He observed my son too and my son is more skittish and shy when I'm not around. He needed to see how my son interacts with a stranger (minus mom). OlderMom38856.531712963what is this neuropsyche test? What does it tell you?
well, it really depends on what the doctor wants. ours had a tova test (kind of a computer game) a eeg, and an mri along with hours of interacting and absorbing our son play. he is 8. It was the best decision I ever made. Getting to the right dr really was a gift from God! my son was on a lot of meds that he didn't need. Now, it's just Adderall and Amitriptyline for his hand tremors and head ache. His behavior is much better and now that we know all he has is adhd, it's fine.
one thing to add - my son's dr said that his chronic headaches were from the strattera. we stopped the strattera and added the amitriptyline and now he is doing GREAT!!!!
I would love to have that test done on my child. Is this something insurance pays for or is this an outside of insurance treatment?
it really depends on your insurance. ours covered every thing except for the tova. They paid 100%, less the .00 co-pay for the office visit. The tova was 0.00, but it was worth it!
What's a tova? Small mom school gave the 2 tests you mentioned. My biggest concern is why has my child's iq dropped in the last 3 years. The DR. I found like that don't take ins. I hear a Brain scan is good also. My sons eeg shows that 1 set of voltz/hurtz is slower than the parts of his brain. Some here said their kids were blue at or after birth. Oxyagen depervation has cause Brain injury. Why are they not classified this way instead? Yes this would still qualify in a ohi category. When my son has his appt. I am asking the dr. about this vary thing. RN
