Unfortunately, the only way to let people check it out without joining
is to make all messages publically readable, which means google will
pick up and index everything said on the list. Since some people
might not want a casual google search on their name by one of their
pupils to reveal that thay have ADHD, if the school does not know, it
is set up so you have to join before you can read the messages.
But the good news is that there's no wait for someone to approve
membership. You can click 'join this group', read the messages
and leave, all in a few minutes if that's what you want to do.
