Stuff that helps 2 | ADHD Information
hello all, I have read some posts lately that made me think this might be useful. Here's a synopsis of the original. If you want to read all of it just do a topic search of "Stuff that helps"
-Caffeine/coffee, mountain dew, green tea. (stimulant effect)
-Alarm clocks for mornings.
-Flax seed oil
-Meds early-one hour prior to wakeup (mom/dad gets to wake up early, give med and then let kid sleep until wakeup time, med takes effect, morning easier and night-time easier because less sleep disturbance.)
-Lay out all materials/clothes night before
-Dana Alphasmart
-Palm pilot for teenagers
-EXERCISE!!
-Karate
-swimming
-Green outside time. Apparently a study showed ADHD was alleviated by green outside time. Lawn, trees.
-Silly putty
-Montessori School
-Homeschooling
-Feed the book beast
-Omegas
-ROUTINE-NEVER VARY, IT COMFORTS THEM
-weighted blanket
-weighted vest : These are non medicative and useful. My experience has been very positive.
-No red dye.
This is a synopsis. The posts are more interesting.
Best wishes to all. Thanks for the list! I found it very useful and was amazed at how many of those things would be helpful to all children, not just ADDers. Thanks Adamant and BPQW, these are things I have gleaned from reading posts or trying myself. I hope that they are useful.
Best to all.thanksbump

I have one question about the list. I know stimulants are supposed to help-can't figure it out. It seems caffeine would be toxic for my ds 6. Wouldn't it make him more hyper. Also, I did post a question about Montessori on the education board. Interesting to see it listed here.

I have to disagree on the caffeine part... caffeine can be very dangerous to young bodies as well as older ones... for a year I drank a cup of coffee in the morning... i was 23 at the time... i got lumps in my breast due to the caffeine. I stopped drinking it and the lumps went away... just think what it could do your little ones if caffeine had this affect on a 23 year old woman....
Caffeine can build up in your system and who knows how long it can last or how long the affects willl stay with you.
please try to find other ways than caffeine.
Hi Everybody!
I haven't been here in awhile so I was surprised when this thread resurfaced. The original is much more interesting and descriptive. I will see if I can bump it.
As to the caffeine question, it goes back to the mechanics of ADHD. ADHD brains are actually under-active. Most meds are of the stimulant variety and coffee or caffeinated beverages are the lowest on the totem pole. When I used to come here, alternative medicine was very sought after and a reluctance to medicate was pretty common in all of us. We're all just looking to do the best for our kids and if we could do it non-medicatively, more the better. I still use this stuff. My son has had that weighted blanket going on 3 yrs and he won't sleep without it. He still uses the vest on weekends and that is when I try the Mountain Dew. Honestly, I don't know if it helps, but he likes it. Some families homeschool and give there kid a cup of coffee in the morning and it calms them down enough to learn.
Finally I can't praise his Montessori school enough, I will be donating money there my whole life, I am so grateful to them. With a treated ADHD child, montessori school is a godsend. If you're interested, I am sure that a lot will turn up with a search, I know I posted many times about it in the past.
Best To All.
green tea has many anti oxidants which actually have been proven in numerous studies to shrink brain tumors in elderly asian men. and that the amount of caffine in the green was low enough that even people with heart conditions could have a cup. this is the first ive heard of caffine being cancerous . its not on the carninogen list or on the probable carninogen list.
but would explain why after having dranf caffineated drinks for 35 years i have man breasts. something to ponder i think this list is a great idea . i personally eat green peas thinking it helps me in some way have deep thoughts.
sammo...
if you are referring to my post... I did not say that it was cancer... I said lumps, Fibrocystic lumps.
Just wanted to clear that up.
