Recommended ADHD Vacation Ideas? | ADHD Information

If your child is ADHD, with an emphasis on the H, any vacation that keeps the child physically active is a good one.  Disney World was a blast when we went, but my son was nine, and I think that's kind of the perfect age because he was old/tall enough to ride on any of the rides, but he was still young enough to enjoy the fantasy aspect.  I saw parents with younger kids, and they looked pretty miserable.  It's hot there, and if your kid can't ride a lot of the rides because she isn't tall enough, then it can be just a lot of walking around in the heat .  My son also loved Hawaii because there were all kinds of day activities for kids at our condo.  My son was eight, and we had an absolute blast there!  He learned to snorkel and boogie board, he climbed Diamond Head and visited a culture center, where there was a lua (sp) later in the evening.  Great vacation for a kid!  (That's actually kind of a funny story--I won the trip to Hawaii, right when our son was picked out for us by the foster-to-adopt agency we were using.  My son moved in with us and went to Hawaii two days later!  He had never flown on a plane, or traveled anywhere, and there he was, flying on an eight-hour plane flight with two adults he didn't know.  You would think he would have been terrified, but he was soooo happy .)

I live in New Mexico so we tend to travel around the Southwest region.  A couple of years ago we took the kids to San Carlos Mexico, which is about four hours from the Arizona boarder, and had a blast.  My son especially loved the deep sea fishing, and my daughter loved the horse back riding.  Best of all the rooms were really reasonable; we stayed at a former Club Med (the rooms were right on the beach--literally about 30 feet away).

Also, Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands here in New Mexico are also awesome for kids--a shameless plug for my state!

we went to seaworld, disney world, bushgarden and other little attractions in orlando with my 3 year old ADHD and my 9 year old daughter and they both loved it.my son was the best behaved is ever been.we went in october thought so it was not too hot.

here in scotland we take them to day trips to aquariums, zoos, safari parks ect..

we have tvs that attached to the seats to keep them occupied during car journeys

jamescrazymom,

Another shameless plug for your state--my son said the skiing vacation we went on in Taos this year was the most fun he had ever had doing anything.  He said on the plane flight back home, "Now THAT'S a place I would move to."  (He's opposed to our moving anywhere because this is the first real home he's had.)

Lillian, your son has great taste--Taos is very beautiful indeed!  All of Northern New Mexico is Mountainous and sooo green; many picture NM as being a total desert, but that's not the case.

I've done Disney when my son was 5, and 10, he is now 12, and he was better when he was five. It really stressed him out, he loved sea world though and had a ball. But all we do now is rent a cottage in N.H., we went last year for three  days, and he loved it so much we're going for a week in July this year. It's simple all they have is a pool but all the attractions are right down the st. It's lots of fun and not very expensive. We are going on a cruise.  ACtually we're leaving Sunday.  For the kids it will be great as they have kids clubs with organized activities that keep them busy (and I don't have to worry bout wracking my brains trying to figure out what they will enjoy).  And then when the boat pulls in at a port they can spend the day with us.

Hi. New to forum. We have two great kids. An 11 yr old son and 6 yr.old ADHD daughter. We know all of you go on summer vacations together so we are soliciting your suggestions for fun vacation spots for them this summer and why. Thank you for any advice you can recommend!

Club Med. Any of the ones that have kids clubs. Their staff are young twenty-somethings and their atmosphere is overwhelmingly positive. They teach the kids sports in a non competitive environment, which is great for an ADHD kid. At the end of the week the kids usually get a little medal. Everyone who has ever gone to one with kids loves it for their sakes. The rooms are a bit spartan, but comfortable and the big secret is that their food is great. (The French don't tolerate bad food)
Alternatively, any all inclusive that has a kids club is usually good.
Best of luck, Mills

they have so many things to do on the one resort you don't ever have to leave!  It's the best vacation we have ever been on and we love to travel!  they have all kinds of things for kids to do.  You will not be disappointed.  they have bikes to ride all over the place.  they have several Pro Golf courses, FREE shuttle to any where you want to go on the 1000's of acres of Resort.  they have jet skies, 5  miles of private beaches, over 10 pools, horse back riding, boating, hiking trails, tours, many i could go on and on.  You will love it!!!
