My 7 year old son who is 49 pounds and adhd started adderall xr 5 mg about 3 weeks ago. Started great the first few days, then seemed to not be affective. Doctor increased it to 10mg. But, I noticed he wakes up aggressive and mean and he cries alot. He has only had 2 doses of the 10mg dose, but now the doctor decided to put him on regular adderall 5 mg, once in morning, once after school.
I wonder if anyone has tried both and what thier experiences are. Today he was great again, not the least bit aggressive, even got a great day in his book from the teacher. Now I wonder if he should stay on the xr or we should try the regular. Just curious to hear from others before I make my decision. Thanks, Donna
We started the Adderall XR trial three weeks ago. My son is almost 8, weighs 72 pounds. His psych told us to do 5 mg for a week, go up to 10 for a week, then go to 15 as the highest dose during the trial. We saw no difference at 5, pretty good results at 10, and had a crying mess at 15mg. We only did the highest dosage for three days because by late afternoon he was a wreck from "coming down". I would rather deal with inattention at supper than an angry, inconsolable child.
We haven't tried the regular Adderall, as we were looking for a way to avoid meds at school. I'll be interested to see what people have to say. Good luck.
This is the exact medication my son was on we started out with little dosages then progressed to a dosage of 30mg of a year and a half. He also took the 5mg pill in the afternoon. My son did get up aggressive so the Dr. suggested that I give him his medication30 min before he was sposed to get up. This suggestion has worked wonders for us our mornings are calmer and we go through out the day with little mishaps. Hope this helps, as it happens my son no longer takes Adderall xr he is currently on Focalin xr in the morning and Focalin tab in the afternoon.
Both my sons, 10 yr 65 lbs. and 8 yr 57lbs, take the regular Adderall 10mg. We've had a good year. My 10yr probably could have used an afternoon dose but the teacher wasn't complaining too much and I wasn't ready to deal with the school on the afternoon meds. I may have to do something different next yr for him.
There wasn't any huge melt downs only on occasion was my 8 yr ultra sensitive about things. If I could get them to do homework right after school it was much easier getting through it. They eat almost nonstop until bedtime so I didn't need to worry about that. I've been pretty happy with the regular Adderall.
