joesmom, for us having OT, PT, social skills, special ed (1-1 aide to help him organize and focus, and speech therapy has changed him 100%. THis is a kid who didn't speak until five or potty until then. He was taught textbook socializing and can get by socially, although nothing is going to make him LIKE doing it. That worked best for us. It's like he's 85% better.

oldermom,

what intervention do you think is the most helpful?

In our autism group, even the parents are guessing as to the cause. Most likely it has many causes. The only truth right now is that we don't know what causes autism. Likely there is a genetic component. Mercury has never been proven as a factor. Many autistic kids are born that way. I've only met a few parents whose kids regressed at 18 mo.-2 years. Most were born "different"--poor eye contact, didn't want to be held, screamed too much, etc. So the only fact we have is that we have no facts. Right now interventions are the best way to ensure that the child becomes as productive as possible. There are no cures--I wish there were--I'd be first in line. Desperate people do tend to rush for cures where they don't exist and those who take advantage of desperate people, frankly, make me sick. In actuality autism is on the rise, but (and this is my opinion) this is because there is more knowledge of high functioning autism so it is spotted more often. But it's not on the decline. IMO it's not on the rise either. It's just more understood and diagnosed more often. Parents are desperate--try diets/meds/all sorts of interventions...from what I've seen, and it's only my experience, I haven't seen a difference in the kids except for when they use interventions. ADHD is the same as autism--nobody knows the cause. There are some professionals who believe they are linked, but again no proof.OlderMom38863.2641898148

Do you know now Neurological disorders are on a decline. In net world daily it states this has occured since metals have neen removed. If it is a lye than the dr. is dumb and the test results are bogus. I disagree with your attitude about alternatives. Regular medacine doesn't look for a cause.  A cause is behind there. A genetic disorder can be done in a blood test by a genetitic dr. The test must be for that exact problem though. I know this cause our son already had 1 genetic test done. I bet everyone has some faulty dna somewhere. Yes a dna pathways test can be done. You don't get we are heading towards a comunist society these days. We are loosing our rights as time goes on Glen. I don't mean to be mean but I am not the professional they are. Dr./phyarmcey couldn't give med if didn't go to a dr. My thing is not enough test are performed before giving meds out. I am not anti meds. I just believe your are what goes in it. The cause should be looked for.

Attention issues isn't alone. A lot of it can't happen with poor processing either. The 1 test they can't pass if the eyemovements are a issue also. Nystagmus is the name.

Don't think it's very legit.  They are another bunch with the idea that mercury and other metals cause autism even though it's been ruled out many many times.  They are big on chelation therapy and I highly discourage it for the delitirious effect it has on people.

Any time the main page has metal poisoning in it I worry.  They are going the easy route (expensive too) and that is never good.

They have found autism all over the world - even in places where metal poisoning would be nearly impossible to achieve.  They have measured metal toxicity in thousands of test patients and never found a link.  They have tried to correlate immunization with thimerozal treated innoculant and autism and found no link.  They have tried to show a link to immunizations and autism but places where they do not innoculate or use non-thimerozal based innoculants the autism stays the same.

Why do they keep beating this dead horse??

They want your money that's why!  I hate how they say the drug manufacturers have some conspiracy to make money yet when you look for good alternatives all you find is this junk.

Upsetting.

I don't believe you are mean oldtimer.  I do however feel a great deal of worry and concern that you bring up quack cures a lot.  They are easy to spot for many but for others looking desparately I know that any non-med "solution" is what they desire.

Neurological disorders haven't gone down.  Heavy metal poisoning in the first and somewhat second world have though.  That only removes the insanity caused by mercury and the wasting diseases like chromium and selenium poison.  The third world in south america, africa, east europe/asia is actually finding far more heavy metal poisoning sadly.  Especially mercury in south america (gold mining), chromium/selenium poisoning elsewhere (technology processing, metal refining).  It's very tragic and cause millions to be sick and many thousands to die horrible deaths.

Autism isn't caused by metal poisoning.  Look at the statistics in places where heavy metal is declining - you'll see autism increasing in a steady slope.  That is ample proof of lack of heavy metals not making a difference.

Regular medicine DOES look for a cause!  You've been soured on medical people by the alternative treaters and it's sad for you.  They've made leaps and bounds in finding the causes for things such as heart disease, parkinsons, AIDS - pretty much anything you can name they have many thousands upon thousands of researchers looking into the roots of all disease.

All the DNA "tests" these alternative people make you pay for are bogus.  They don't even send the DNA to a certified lab (they are so full with medical and police work believe me it would take sometimes years).  They simply take the sample and make up a disorder to make you pay for - sometimes with your or your children's life.

You have MORE rights than ever before.  Individual rights are at a height never seen before in any era.  Too much some may think - the individual can override the rights of the population (not immunizing, opting out of certain education, etc.).  You can sue for any reason you could possibly imagine (the lady who lost her psychic powers when supposedly hit by a lumberyard board comes to mind) and assert your personal rights there.

There are no conspiracies - only conspiracy theorists scaring everyone not on lithium.  It's sad really - and people think I'M cynical!!

All I'd like is to see you put a little thought into what you recommend.  There are many liars out there and very little honesty.  Don't believe one percent of what you read on the 'net without backup data to proove it.

Can you source the site?Look at their cite great stuff on treating the biomedical cite of this.
