My 12 year old has been on many many meds. for his adhd, the only thing that has worked is his concerta, he;s never been sleepy, and he plays soccer, and football. Have you asked your Dr. about the dose? My son is on 72 mg. every morning. Just remember every medicine has a different affect on every kids. Or don't give him the medicine the day of the games. My son has to have it to focus for the game!

Hi all.

I have not been here in awhile. Not because I dont need help, only because I have been busy.

My 8 yr old son has been taking concerta for the past year. When we started this med it worked wonders. It still works good but it seems to make my son too calm and he always wants to take a nap.

This spring he played soccer, which was a wonderful experience for my son. He does not do well in school and he was one of the best players on his team. He has had a more positive attitude.

Since spring break, I have not given him concerta. So he has done wonderful with soccer but his last meeting with the teacher she voiced concern on his attitude with school. It is like he gave up.

My point is he needs meds to do well in school but I need one that will not drain him of all of his energy that he needs to play sports. I need any suggestions or experiences. Please help.

My son tried Adderall XR for about 5  months.  It was beautiful.  Then I got concerned about the side effects, and he's not taking them anymore.  We are doing some different alternatives.  The time he was on them though, he did extremely well, no problems whatsoever during that time.  Night and day, with school, grades, homework, self esteem, confidence.   Life was easier for everybody.   Beautiful.

Concerta made him a little sleepy and "took away his happy."

Learning difficulties can make kids feel like they want to give up.  It's so much harder for them, takes so much more effort.  Maybe try a different med, and/or a tutuor to help keep him motivated and confident.  A tutor did wonders for my son.  We will likely start up again for 8th grade next year.
