medication and summer | ADHD Information

i know i'm posting this on the adhd medication but i was wondering if anyone elses child is having the same trouble my son is having. dillon is taking depakote and seroquel..he is bipolar. anyways during the hot weather his face turns VERY RED...i am aware that one of the medications will cause this. so we are very careful but i still worry about it..does anyone else have this problem? and if so what do you do about it.. i hate to keep dillon in but i sure in the heck don't want him to have a heat stroke.the only thing that seems to work is spraying him with the hose, drinking water doesn't work.. i want to take him to the zoo or the amusement park this summer but i'm alittle afraid... can anyone help..   he isn't getting sunburn... the meds he is on stops him from sweating.. so of course his body can't cool itself down...   Use sunscreen it help prevent skin cancer. We just need 1 hr a day helps with depression. Sunlight naturally makes vitamin D.

Try checking the ms (multiple sclerosis) sites for ideas. Those of us with ms have problems with heat, and some people with ms no longer sweat (making it worse). I fill a water bottle 1/2 full and freeze. Then whe I go in the heat I fill it up. This can be used on the face and neck as well as adding cold water to the body core (drinking). The cool wraps for around the neck are helpful as well, and wrapping it around the frozen water bottle then around your neck is really nice. I can cheat and wash my long hair before going out. Some people soak their lower legs in cool (not cold) water before going out (acts as a heat sink).

good luck,

vickie

he doesn't sweat at all... the meds he is on causes this.. i had the same problem last year... its one of the side effects of the medication.. its one of those things where you have to weigh the good and the bad ..and this is one of the bad that drives me crazy..

have you ever seen the cool wraps that you can put around the neck? when you talk to your doc see if this might be something that can help. (sorry but I can't remember the name of it)

sheri, is his face red because of the shunting of blood to the surface or because he is actually not able to sweat at all? When we get hot, we shunt blood to the surface to cool ourselves, if he isn't sweating then you need to keep him cool on the surface with water to help transfer the heat from within to the outside. That might be why the hose works, but drinking water doesn't. Have you asked the doctor? If he isn't sweating, he needs to have a way to cool his body or maybe a med switch. Sounds like you have a reason to be concerned and this warrants a doc call, especially in the hot summer months. DEPAKOTE WORKS WELL IN OUR SON HE IS ON 500 MG BUT HIS IS THE ER KIND. THIS NEEDS TO BE CHECKED ROUTINALLY THRU A BLOOD LEVEL CHECK. EVERY 6 MONTHS. PROPEL IS GREAT TO DRINK THIS TIME OF YEAR- . -------
