Will this help me?? | ADHD Information

Share
I went to see a phychologist yesterday, had a lenghty discussion about ADD.  Took the test etc. It was clear I had a severe case of ADD. He perscribed me Cymbalta!  I looked it up on the internet, it's for depression and/or anxiety!  I have nothing near depression, anxiety slightly.  But my reason for even seeing him was to seek help with my educational problems, not being able to focuse, very short attention span.  I took a 30 mg capsul yesterday, by the evening time I was sick to my stomach on the bathroom floor vomiting.  I'm scared to take another one today and have the same results since I'm going out tonite.  Starting next week I move up to 60 mg and I don't know if I should continue it or not.  To be quite honest with you, I don't even think this is the stuff I should be taking!  Who knows, does anybody??

I actually had the same problem of doctors continually telling me I was depressed, yet I knew I was happy. I fully realized that I "looked" depressed, looking in from the outside. When people dont do a whole lot, can't get things done, procrastinate, aren't functioning well in their lives, well, it looks like they are depressed.

You know women are almost always diagnosed with anxiety and depression first before they get an ADHD diagnosis?!

Anyway, I know many people ARE depressed and it often goes right along with ADHD, but for me, I knew that I wasn't. I have been depressed before, and know that dark, doomed feeling. I dont' have that now. I'm just scattered. I was lucky to find a very good doctor that knew what ADHD looked like and believed me when I said I wasn't depressed, was happy, a positive person, just so extremely frustrated at my spacey/scattered self.

Good luck to you!  I hope you find a good med that works well. By the way, can you call him before your two weeks and tell him you can't tolerate it? Many doctors will just switch you if you call them.

Take care!

He was very quick to give me the Cymbalta, too.  At first he had mentioned Strettera?  And my mother gave a quick "No!"  I guess to many issues with that med.  So I'll see when I talk to him again.  Thanks

No offense, but your mom should educate herself about these medications before ordering your doctor around. Because of her objection, you are now on a drug that is far less appropriate for ADD (especially w/o depression!), causes more side effects, and has a worse reputation for having withdrawal symptoms.

Cymbalta acts pretty much exactly the same as Strattera since they are both norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. However Cymbalta is also a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, like Prozac.

Incidentally, my doctor put me on Prozac at first. It made me tired yet restless, jittery, and every time I took a dose I'd get a nasty burning nauseous sensation and often throw up. All those symptoms are concurrent with serotonin syndrome, which is caused when those of us with normal serotonin levels end up with too much because of those kinds of antidepressants.

I have never heard of it. If you want to try it again, make sure you eat with it. I honestly thought don't have much tolerance for meds that don't agree with me, and neither does my doctor. If you aren't happy with it, your doctor should listen to you. I would call him and let him know that are getting sick from it.

I must have seen a psychiatrist.  Sorry, my mistake.  Physchiatrist Abu is the one that prescribed me Cymbalta...

stop it.

It's probably going to make you worse. Don't forget that taking psychiatric meds do carry a risk. It's not worth it if you don't have the depression or anxiety. Your psychiatrist is probably not listening to you. He's mute.

Or he worries about stimulants too much...

It isn't uncommon to have depression and ADHD together.  I would ask your doc to explain why he/she thinks this is the way to start - and if you take it with food and still get sick, definitely get it changed.

Sometimes pdocs treat the depression and then the ADHD, in order to be able to sort out which symptoms are which.  I don't need nearly as much stim meds when my depression isn't in the way.  Plus some anti-depressants kind of compliment the stimulant meds so they work more effectively.

Then again, some doctors are just too afraid to prescribe stimulants because of all the federal regulations and the potential for losing their license if they misjudge a patient.  If you get the feeling the doc just plain doesn't want to prescribe stims, and doesn't have a real reason for not doing so -- get a new doc.

All of you are right.  Thank you for the info.  I took it once again yesterday and had the same problem.  I couldn't even go out to eat because I was soo sick.  So, I see him again in two weeks, I'll explain how this med just isn't working for me.  If anything, I feel depressed laying on my bathroom floor with my insides coming out!  lol.  It makes me want to lay in bed waiting for the next session of sickness.  That's what triggers the damn depression I guess I have?  lol.  But I will talk to him about it.

Steven D:  I agree with a lot you're saying.  That surely might be the case.  I guess like I said I'll see him in two weeks, discontinue the use of Cymbalta till then.  I always seem to have the crack head doctors who just throw random meds at me and don't even blink an eye.  He was very quick to give me the Cymbalta, too.  At first he had mentioned Strettera?  And my mother gave a quick "No!"  I guess to many issues with that med.  So I'll see when I talk to him again.  Thanks

Reisa:  He did say something about treating my so called "depression" before he attacks the AD/HD, but like I said, I have simply NO SIGNS of depression.  I'm completly content with life, except the issue with not being able to focuse correctly, sit still, etc.  Thank you for your input.

Are you sure you went to a phychologist? As Imac said in another post, they can't prescribe medication.  Only a psychiatrist or a medical doctor can prescribe medicine.
