There's no reason to take XR 4 hrs apart. The whole point to XR is to have a med that you can take that (in theory) you only take one time a day. The prescribing data fromShire Pharmaceuticals states, "ADDERALL XR® is a once daily extended-release, single-entity amphetamine product."

You may want to discuss this with your Dr and find out why he/she would tell you to take it 4 hrs apart.
This would be the wierdest dosing I have seen... are you sure it is XR?  4 hours between doses of IR is about right, but 6-8 hours between doses of XR. 

so what about the xr though? i take xr... do i have to wait 4 hours or can i take it after 3 hours when i take my xr?

i take 30 mg of adderall xr 10mg 3 times a day.. i heard you have to wait 4 hours between doses... do you have to wait 4 hours or can you take a dose after 2 or 3 hours... how long do people on here wait to take their doses... its not going to hurt me if i take my doses less then 4 hours apart is it?........

satisfaction38873.5101388889XR is designed to give you a partial dose when you take it and the remainder 4-5 hours later (although that time varies). For example, if you take 10mg of XR you're getting 5mg right away and 5mg 4-5 hours later. The 4 hour time period relates to Adderall IR (instant release), not XR (extended release).

If you're actually taking IR then you can take it earlier but I would give yourself at least 3 to 3.5 hours between doses. I wouldn't go less than 3 because you might have double the amount of medicine in you at the same time.
