I have my son in karate, but I have been wondering if it is the right thing. What is everyone's take on karate for children under 5 that have ad/hd?
If he's having fun and not frustrated and upsetting other kids in the class, then continue. Any kids in the martial arts at that young an age probably aren't getting much besides some fun and excercise. nekochan38875.6451388889
I was thinking the same...fun and exercise when I first started him with karate. Thanks for your response.
Yes, I take a "time out" from karate when he does this, perhaps a week.Lillian the only problem is that Brandon's school hasn't let out yet. They go until the end of June. I hope things improve in 2 weeks at karate.Brandon had karate last night. He wasn't listening to his sensei at all. I lost count of the number of pushups he had to do. I don't know what the problem was. One of them came over and asked me. At the end of class the other sensei told him to wait. He told him that he hadn't worked very hard. He also informed him that he could take away his belt if he didn't start to work harder. I noticed a mom and some of the kids in his class standing nearby. I figured it wasn't any of their business so I moved in beside him. I wanted to hear Brandon's replies to sensei also. Ha anyone else's children been doifficult lately?Actually they don't have a class next week. There is a function at the place they rent the space. It's just as well.Yes! I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago. It's "endoftheschoolyearitis." My son's school let out almost two weeks ago, and he's been getting better everyday. I was about to strangle him two weeks ago. Hang in there! Brandon is just tired. Do you feel that Brandon was doing his best at the time and it just wasn't enough? If you think he really was trying and just couldn't get it together (and I suspect he was since he kept getting push ups) then I hope you let him know its ok and that he is still a great kid. This time of year is so hard for kids.[QUOTE=lovemyboy]Brandon had karate last night. He wasn't listening to his sensei at all. I lost count of the number of pushups he had to do. RESPONSE: OUr son is 7 almost 8 and has been in various marital arts for almost 2 years. JUST before summer he finally broke down and said he didn't like it. See; he was getting picked up from school by his martial arts school and taking field trips on M-W-F and then on TU and THUR they took a 45 min. class. It kept getting worse and worse...finally I just asked my son if he would enjoy JUST the field trips and NO martial arts classes...his face lite up like a Christmas Tree. I didn't want him to FEEL that he was a failure by taking him out; but we gave him a choice to take a break from karate for a while and he totally loves having a summer camp that has NO karate. Perhaps your son is findind it TOO hard..it IS hard work..really hard. Maybe he'd like to take a break as well. Just a thought.

RESPONSE: Actually our DR. told us it would be GREAT for our son at the time and he was 5. He did like it at 5 but when the 'work-outs' got to be TOO hard...he lost interest; but knows that when and if he wants to go back into it; he can.
I _am_pauls_mom Brandon's karate classes end for the summer after the first week in July. So I can ask him if he wants to go back in the fall sometime during the summer. Actually the sessions run for 8 weeks. Therefore he doesn't have to go back in September when they start up again. He can start back later.I am pauls mom....thank you for your response. We are starting back with karate tomorrow, or at least I think so. His karate and tumbling school rescheduled on us and now both are back to back on the same day. Not sure this is a great idea for a 4 1/2 year old who has ad/hd. I may have to help him decide which one he would rather do. I was really hoping they would be Tuesday/Thursday and he could have some exercise on both of these days rather than all in one hour. We'll just have to wait and see. I posted this down in the basement. I asked for suggestions on how to handle the situation with my friend. I really think Brandon would do better without her there. It's too distracting for him to have us talking and her laughing I think. I said that I think just him and I should go. She said that she is still coming when he asked her later.
Does anyone have anmy suggestions? BUMP
