i need help with my research!!! | ADHD Information

My son is 8 years old.He is on 72mg of concerta and 15mgs of focalin. It has helped pretty good. It works for a while but as they get bigger the dosage wears off.Maybe it last a few months to 6 months. No side effects on these meds. My day starts out like hell. It is very sad to watch. He is in his own little world. Can't focas or listen. He tunes everybody out. I have been dealing with this since my child was 18 months old. I have tried everything. Nothing works.But medicine for him. Kids think my son is weird. They single him out all the time. It breaks my heart. He wants to play with the kids. But they are mean to him. And he doesn't have a clue that they are being mean he just wants to play. This has been a strain on family and friends. They don't under stand why he is acting that way they just think he is being a brat. They just don't understand adhd. Until someone has dealt with this they don't understand. My son has very low self esteem. He won't do things for fear of doing it wrong. He is not social that much that way.My son has an iep they have been wonderful with him and his problem. WHAT ADHD/ADD MEDICATION IS YOU CHILD ON? Concerta 18mg, Strattera 18mg.

HOW HAVE THE MEDICATIONS THAT YOU HAVE USED HELPED YOUR CHILD WITH CONTROLLING THEIR ADD/ADHD? He is able to focus in school, he is actually passing classes, and making friends, and is able to concentrate, and not chew on his clothes, or socks, with the help of the strattera.

ON AVERAGE, HOW LONG DOES THE MEDICATION LAST? 10 hours

DOES THE MEDICATION THAT YOU USE PRODUCE ANY NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS? He doesn't want to eat lunch, so he has lost some weight, but with the combination, he actually does eat, and has gained some of the weight back.

WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY LIKE WHEN YOUR CHILD HAS NOT TAKEN THEIR ADD/ADHD MEDICATION? He runs, around in circles, and cannot sit still for more that 4 min, he doesn't listen, and kids were scared of him.

BESIDES MEDICATION, HAVE YOU TIRED ANY STRATEGIES TO HELP MAINTAIN THEIR BEHAVIOUR AT HOME? IF SO WHAT ARE THEY? I tried behavior modification, rewards, the dore program, which didn't help.

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE ANY SOCIALISING PROMBLEMS THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ADHD/ADD? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY? Due to having ADHD, my son, gets along better with younger children.

DOES YOUR CHILDS ADD/ADHD CAUSE A STRAIN ON YOUR FAMILY? How? It does to an extent, because I am a single mom, and my son's father wants nothing to do with him.

DOES YOUR CHILDS ADD/ADHD AFFECT THEIR SELF ESTEEM? IF YES HOW?  YES, before he didn't have any friends, and got F's in school, and the kids made fun of him

WHAT ADHD/ADD MEDICATION IS YOU CHILD ON? Adderall XR, Wellbutrin, Depakote (she also has generalized anxity disorder)

HOW HAVE THE MEDICATIONS THAT YOU HAVE USED HELPED YOUR CHILD WITH CONTROLLING THEIR ADD/ADHD? Is now able to focus well in school.  She is not as impulsive.  Before meds, she was so impulsive, she was in danger of injuring herself.

ON AVERAGE, HOW LONG DOES THE MEDICATION LAST? About 10 hours.

DOES THE MEDICATION THAT YOU USE PRODUCE ANY NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS?  Yes, no appetite.

WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY LIKE WHEN YOUR CHILD HAS NOT TAKEN THEIR ADD/ADHD MEDICATION? Impulsive, wild, very loud.  She usually notices, and reminds me if I forget to give them to her.  She does not like feeling this way.

BESIDES MEDICATION, HAVE YOU TIRED ANY STRATEGIES TO HELP MAINTAIN THEIR BEHAVIOUR AT HOME? IF SO WHAT ARE THEY? Counseling, some diet modification (this didn't work because she is too picky).

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE ANY SOCIALISING PROMBLEMS THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ADHD/ADD? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY?  She does have some peer-related problems due to the fact that she is more immature than her peers in some ways, and more mature in others.  She sometimes becomes rather annoying/bossy with her peers.

DOES YOUR CHILDS ADD/ADHD CAUSE A STRAIN ON YOUR FAMILY? How?She has an older brother, age 17, with ODD.  His problems have put much more of a strain on our family.  However, much of her dad's time is spent dealing with him.  Much of my time is spent dealing with her.  Her 15 year old brother who has neither is pretty much left out.  He is beginning to experience problems due to this!

DOES YOUR CHILDS ADD/ADHD AFFECT THEIR SELF ESTEEM? IF YES HOW? Yes.  She understands that she has more problems paying attention at school than her peers do.  She also realizes that she has fewer friends than some of the other children.  She also gets into trouble at home due to some of her impulsive behaviors.

DOES/DID YOUR CHILD RECEIVE ANY SPECIAL PROVISONS AT SCHOOL TO HELP THEM WITH THEIR SCHOOL WORK? Yes, she receives more time on timed math tests, and decreased homework.  She is in Title I math.
