Some of it sounds like my daugher however she is very outgoing and loves to be included with other kids, very social. If she has good social skills, she can't be on the autism spectrum. If she WANTS to have good social skills and has no idea how, she could.

joesmom, the social skills weakness of ADHD is NOTHING like in ASD. If a child really doesn't "get it" at all, it ain't ADHD. On autism board, if you care to look, you will see the difference. There is simply no comparison. ADHD kids can and do make friends, even if they can be annoying.
Immaturity and social skills weakness ARE part of ADHD.
They are far more severe with autism. The kids are more than just "behind" in social skills. They have no clue in how to interact in a normal way and many don't even care to try. They are usually seen as "strange."  It's much deeper than immaturity. These are kids that never do "get it" socially. It's a cluelessness that never really goes away. Some much higher functioning adults with Aspergers learn to "pass," but I chat on a board with AS adults. As a rule, they don't like socializing. Many choose to never marry and aren't upset about it--they like to be alone. And these are the highest functioning. They at least hold jobs.

Thanks,

That does explain the difference between ADHD and ASD

Well I thought that social skill weakness was part of ADHD....does anyone remember the social age formula that was posted a while back?

If that formula was correct then my sons social maturity or social skill would be equal to someone a year and a half younger.

Perhaps this is one of the areas that overlaps somewhat ....maybe the type of social skill problems differ..

I asked the folks on the ASD board what to say to ADHD parents who want to know the difference between ADHD and ASD and got a good answer. Here it is. I told the poster I would share it.

Pam,

ADHD kids are capable of having a give and take conversation, they can read nonverbal signals that ASD kids cannot.

ADHD kids present symptoms usually just in academic or organized settings.  ASD symptoms present universally.

ADHD kids usually have strong control over language structure and use it effectively to get needs met. ASD kids have great struggles with this.

hope this is helpful
