well i went to the Dr.s today i found one and well like i thought he passed with flying colors into the world of adhd and started him on 18mg of concerta time will tell I'm wondering how long it takes to see some kind of difference?
You know, my doctor just blew us off too. Then one day I was at wits end and made my sons check up appt ealier to beg for help. I went armed with a notebook pahge full of troublesome behavior. Lucky for me , I didn't see my regular dr...I saw the new nurse practitiooner and she sent me to a psychiatrist to have my DS evaluated. They say ADHD and ODD......I am tring to do some research and sort thinsg out before I decide how to handle it.... I'm a newbie to the site too but my oldest is 19(yrs). many symptoms sound like my son. In addition to the add/adhd dx, his primary dx. was Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.(TLE) the behaviors manifest differently than petit or grand mal. look it up & go info armed (instead of postal) to a neuropsychiatrist dealing with behavioral issues. symptoms started @age 4 & it took us 4 yrs til we found the MD to dx him correctly. FYI, perserverance pays off... he'll be starting his 2nd yr. in college in the fall & is a well balanced kid in all aspects...gives me hope for my 10y/o who shows the same stuff![QUOTE=joemom]I would call around ...first try the health dept and see if they can give you any assistance.... *That would be me and I live in the Buffalo area and we have what is called community health plus for children and families who need insurance. I do have the number if you live in New York State it will work Fidellas 1-800-494-2215 that is one number and another is 716-564-3630. You can go to a county hospital for emergencies. When you call the numbers they can also connect you to other numbers for there are 3-4 choices and when choosing one ask for 1 of them does not include dental so ask then exclude that choice. My Doctor Gave me the Run around for 2 years too I noticed something was wrong on his third Birthday and They didn't do anything until the year before Kindergarten because the preschool got involved......Chances are your child doesn't like himself very much, either. Sometimes it's easier to deal with if you can think of it almost like an addiction: he can't help himself and isn't being purposefully difficult or mean. Whatever his problem or condition is, is what's acting, not him. If you can try to think of it like that and remember that he probably can't stand himself sometimes, it's easier to feel sympathy and empathy, and therefore cut him a break. Cut yourself a break, too: be sure to give yourself some down time.Maybe the state has some aid for you? Whatabout medicare or medicaid? Sorry - I don't really know the difference.
I know some people really don't like to go this route, but maybe it's the only alternative to easing the issues. You should be able to get your child on some kind of insurance through the government programs.

Hi there, I know where you are coming from. My son kyle who is 5 has adhd and autistic tendancies. because Kyle is my 3rd child I knew from when he was about 2 there was something different about him an went to see the dr and they gave me the run around for about 18 months by saying that kyle had a sleeping disorder as he only sleeps for 2 - 3 hors per night but I kept up the fight and did as much research as possible. i kept a diary and got the pre-school to make notes of his behaviour and I gave them all to the specialist and they finally real;ised that he did have adhd. I find it really hard at times and like you I feel as though my other children are missing out but I have learned to cope better. Kyle is not on med's other than omege 3 + 6 which is called IQ and this helps with healthy brain growth and activity (try it it's worth it). Stick with it with the dr's and don't give up. Come onto this site anytime as we have all been where you are now and we all look out for each other.

My local chilren's hospital has classes for parents on how to manage the adhd child. They also have social skills classes for the children. Perhaps your local children's hospital has something like this, or an ADHD clinic.
I have also heard of government sponsored preschool programs for special needs children. I think your local elementary school could give you the contact information, and I also believe they offer reduced fee schedules depending on your income. If your school cannot tell you, contact the local daycare licensing agency--they should at least be able to head you in the right direction. If you get your child enrolled in the preschool program, I believe you can have him evaluated free of cost.
Problem is, although the price is right, school districts are more apt to screw up a diagnosis then nail it down
but they can serve this child in a pre-school setting and provide therapy.....

Do you qualify for that? If you have any kind of Medicaid, most Univeristy Hospitals accept it, and they're really GOOD for diagnosing. My son has had top-of-the-line medical care since infancy and all he's ever had is Medicaid. We even found a private NeuroPsych who took it and tested him for twelve hours. What sort of behaviors are you dealing with so we can suggest which sort of professional would be best (in our opinion)? Did you read the post about ADHD sometimes actually being ASD? Did you check the symptoms of any other disorders? Does she rage? Does she have sensory issues? Any speech delays? Does she hurt herself or others? If so, these are issues beyond ADHD. He could have high functioning autism or early onset bipolar, especially if he rages and hurts people. That's beyond ADHD. Here are a few links you can look at. Still you need either a Psychiatrist (with the MD) or a NeuroPsych (a Psycologist with extra training in brain disorders) for a close-to-accurate diagnosis. It's not unusual not to like your child, even though you love him. Different.

i think that before you deal with your son you should take care of yourself,they pick up on our moods the more you are stressed the more they play up.
take a breather,some time to yourself if you can find somebody to look after the kids for a couple of hours.
i did not take care of myself and i had migraines,i was depressed,stressed and i was in denial with my ADD.NOW THAT I TOOK CARE OF THAT I AM A LOT CALMER AND SO IS MY SON

Hi I'm new here and looking for some support i have a 5 year old son and been TRYING to deal with him since he was born.gosh where do i start my son is impossible.i have looked up all the different symptoms of ADHD and he has all of them and then for some .i cant take it Ive tried all the positive reenforcement,behavior intervention books ............. that has failed yet again. i get the run around by doctors and i want to scream. know one is listening while my whole family is suffering.i also have a 3 year old and i hate that he isn't getting what he needs cause mommy is constantly stressed depressed and going crazy did i mention Krazy.know one is helping and i feel my son (5 yr old)is going to suffer in the long run later down in life. be a screwed up adult because of how i cant deal with him the way he needs and he is not happy with him self.its getting to be where i don't like to be around him and its not normal to not like your own child. all of the adhd symptoms pulse depression anger,fighting, violent, lashes out, unhappy, impulsive the list go's on.i tried to have him diagnosed when he was 2 but the Dr's just said they keep a eye on him for the next couple years and i would have to deal with it the best i can.and thats what i have been doing but is getting the best of all of us.and cant seem to get the Dr's to take me seriously or to listen .add & adhd runs in are family.y i think i have add but i cant get diagnosed or get on meds no insurance for self either we don't make enough to get insurance but make to much for like medical yes this stinks but I'm trying to cope but.......frustrated
