leaving appliances onDoes anyone else have this problem, or has overcome it? I am constantly leaving appliances on. Usually it the the stove and oven, I've been doing that for years, and my husband goes along after me turning things off. Most recently it is the iron! I have gone to iron something in the morning and found that the iron is still on from the previous morning. Its really scary! I'm afraid I am going to burn the house down I try to buy things that turn themselves off automatically. Fortunately the lights on my car do this, or I would be calling AAA a couple of times a week Any suggestions? Basilica, thanks for the great suggestions! EBurns: The car keys problem is one I have solved! It is SOOO embarrassing when you are giving somebody a ride somewhere and the keys are locked in the car! Sorry, I had to laugh. I used to do that, too... I have a car, now, that makes it impossible to lock your keys in it. Turns my lights on and off automatically - it's got all kinds of dummy features for me! ;) I have heard of people who keep a spare key under their car with some magnetic case. Look it up (google it)! I think it's called: "Hide-a-key Magnetic Auto Key Case" I've done that a few times... Left the burner or the oven on... I've even got out of cars and left the door open and then people ask me what I'm doing as I'm walking away. Luckly, my iron has an automatic shutoff. I suggest buying one of those. There are plenty out there that shut themselves off after a certain time. These things are not tooo bad for me so I have not really tried to 'fix' it. Altho, I almost burned the house down a few years ago by forgetting to blow a candle out. I'm only allowed to burn tea lights, nowadays... HA! Some ideas that I might try are: Putting up signs near your problem areas. Hang one up near the stove that says, "TURN ME OFF!!" Having a checklist hanging up somewhere you will see before going to bed or leaving the house. Basically, if you're not going to remember to do these things in your head - then having visual signs/notes may be of help. My forte' is locking my keys in my car. I have a Saturn and I have called them numerous times.... To the point they keep sending me spare keys in the mail. I am responsible for my 1st husbands eyebrows and arm hairs being burnt off I remember choosing to make chips one day, filled the pot with oil and decided to go and give the chooks the scraps while it heated up. Whilst downstairs I saw a weed in the garden and pulled it - then another - then another. Then I hear this scream from upstairs, my 2 year old is screaming because the pot was on fire. Running upstairs to try and find out why she was screaming (because I had forgotten all about the oil) I find my husband trying to put a lid on the pot. Unfortunately, there was a bit of water in the lid and POOF, BANG - there go his eyebrows and arm hairs. We did get the fire out, lost some curtains tho. And can you believe I did it again a month later |
