True, although there is controversy whether is really stunts growth.
Personally I dont think it does. I've been on meds since I was 6 and now I'm 6 foot even, 150 lbs and 15 years old.
Well what I meant was the ADHD would affect the child less, not the medication affecting growth. I was suggesting she try varied treatment as soon as possible to reduce the effects of ADHD.Mhm. It's not like the Ritalin is going to harm the kid (if you've got a doc thats not a qwack). I think the worst that could happen is he throws a drug-induced-tantrum. You'll know if its too much, and if it is then just learn from the mistake and correct it.
Who knows, he may not even need to take medication. Many people say that they have been able to make some changes in their child's diet and/or have them attend therapy for behavior training. I guess for some people it works well enough that medication is not needed.not me..IMac38947.3991203704I did not know that.My son is 11 and has had negative side effects to both RitalinSr and DexedrineSR in the past. I think the doseage was too high. I really would prefer it if he didn't have to take meds. I really want to keep his dosage low if possible. So I want to use other ideas and stratregies to keep his dosage on the low side. I think I will try some diet modification and likely some therapy.
well, think about his weight and use common sense to determine if perhaps the dosage was too high
example- if an 8 year old kid weighing 80 lbs is perscribed 160 mg of ritalin, you can look around and see that people 18 and a 180 lbs dont even take that much so you would probably think "hey that seems like an awful lot" .
I do have common sense. I don't appreciate your comment!
Im surprised it works for him like that.
I take mine weekends and school days, because I feel absolutely horrible when I dont take it and I great when I do take it.
Well consider trying another med or increasing dosage I guess.
It sounds like you are dependent on it. Does this bother you? Dexedrine is available here also. The side effects were worse for him. So we won't go that route again. Concerta is also here in Canada but it is very expensive.
No, it doesnt bother me really, and yes I'm pretty sure im dependent. but ummm yeah i should try dexedrine. And are you paying out of your pocket or insurance?Well I hope my son doesn't ever become dependent on AHDH meds. I wouldn't want to be dependent on any med. I was paying for the Dexedrine myself. You would need to ask your doctor for it.
yeah you cant get any ADD med without a perscription. ummm yeah its not so bad, because just knowing how I'll feel without it is enough to make me not care that I'm dependent. And is dexedrine more strong than adderall? How do you feel without it? I don't know anything about Adderall. It's not available here in Canada.Oh yeah I think I read that it was banned after a kid in boot camp had a stroke because of it. (although he had a heart problems and was exercising in the 110 degree heat).
I feel like I dont wanna do anything, go anywhere, talk to anyone, and I feel extremely tired, and overall depressed and bad.
I didn't think people withn heart problems would be prescribed stims. As far as I know Adderall hasn't been available in Canada.
Are you sure that it's ADHD or ADD you have?
No, it used to be legal in canada, and yeah that happens sometimes, although unfortunate. Doctors, like everyone, make mistakes I guess. And I was originally diagnosed with ADD, but as years and years went by it eventually progressed into ADHD.Have you ever taken a med break? You have been taking them for 9 years now.
Yes, I used to have no problem at all with not taking them on weekends, or during summer breaks. I only became dependent on them shortly after I was diagnosed with severe depression. I did a few things I shouldnt have done under the influence of alcohol and that got me in juvenile hall for about 2 weeks, and I didnt get any adderall in there, (but i did have the effexor) and I remember feeling worse than ever felt before. When I got back I sorta overdid it- I started using alot more than the doc perscribed, because i didnt ever want to feel or remember how i felt when I was in there. So you have depressioon too. Do you take any meds for that? My friend takes effexor for her ADHD. Did the pharmacy or doctor notice that you were using so much extra drugs?I wasnt trying to be an ass I was just simply saying that you can sort of tell if the dose is too much based on common sense......I never said you didn't have common sense, I just said to use it. Okay thank you for clarifying that. I am not a dosage expert. I know many people whose kids have been on ADHD meds. Despite the fact that these kids may be the same ages and roughly the same weights the doses can vary. So there doesn't seem to be a set dosage for kids the same age, height and weight. My son is on 20mg of RitlainSR. He took the same doseage when he was 6. Since he's now 11 what's wrong with that picture.Wow, he's really been on the same dosage for that long???
Naturally he would experience that it doesnt work as well as it did 5 years ago. I've been taking ADD meds since I was 6, and between then and now (15) I've gone back and forth from ritalin, adderall, meditate.
Trust me, either increase the dosage, or maybe even change the medication, it'll make all the difference in the world.
Actually he was off Ritalin for a year or more when he was 8 due to the side effects. He also only takes his meds on school days. The doseage does work most days. I get the odd comment from his teacher. I think the Omegas help to keep his dosage low. His longest break is 2 months during the summer. His doctor suggested this. well they took the alcohol problem seriously, and I my mom found out first when she counted my pills in the bottle and there were about 3 left when I should have ran out 3 weeks later. I told her I was taking that many because I couldnt feel the perscribed dose and it wasnt doing anything. Every now and then I treat myself to a little extra dose of it - today i must've had about 120 mg total but its cool its not an everyday thing. And yes I have depression and I take Effexor for it.
