cant fall asleep | ADHD Information
My son had trouble sleeping the first few days on Adderall XR, then he
was fine. We never take full breaks, but he doesn't always get his second
dose on the weekends. I have found that in June and July I have to block
his windows with black posterboard behind the blinds. He won't admit
that it is too light, but it works. Blankets or anything visible won't work,
because he can't not mess with them. (sorry, grammatically shaky phrase
that any mom of an ADHD kid will understand) Might be worth a try...Well, ummm falsely diagnose him with a cold, then give him some nyquil - a thimble or 2 just enough to relax him you dont need him to be in a coma lol.actually was about to post the same question. My son is 10 y/o, on
Adderall xr & can be up to ALL hrs. midnite on. of course he's then
exhausted in the AM, can't get him up for school etc... any solutions.
( already tried...darkened room, having him read to calm down, no
nintendo in bed) usually i've fallen asleep before him & he's
coming into my room to tuck ME in
My daughters doctor actually reccommended dye free benedryl. We used that last summer as needed. It worked great & my daughter has allegies so I just replaced her zyrtec with the benedryl & took care of 2 problems at once!

*I totally agree.
That's the ONE good piece of advise I got from our Neurologist...... Melatonin...... He felt like it was safe with almost all other meds. We got ours at GNC.... Good luck!!!!! Dawn
here is we now do
no tv,no computer before bedtime
10 tablets of passiflora comp and massage him with solum oil(lavender oil)
last night he fell asleep at 8.30 and woke up today at 7.00
he is still on melatonin but the psy said we can now wean him off it.
Puck Bunny:
Thank you for the info. My son is also hot because the weather is getting hotter. But he actually needs the weight of his blanket to fall asleep and a fan bothers him. He actually rather have it hot in his room rather than cool. I will definitely look into a breathable blanket.

Flaming Rose:
The Naturopath that we see recommended the herbal "Valerian, Lemon Balm
& Hops" mixed with a bit of juice for my son's getting to sleep
troubles. She wants us to try that for a while before Melatonin for my
12 yr old son, also on Adderall XR 15mg. I'm not sure if the NatDoc
would say that to everyone, or if she's heard about the Adderall
connection as well. Interesting. I hadn't heard that, so thanks for
sharing.
My son has been complaining about being sweaty at night lately too
(thank goodness we don't actually live somewhere HOT!), and so that
adds to the not getting to sleep problem. So we're going to try an
oscillating fan in his room, and a different, breathable blanket. His
sleeping has gradually been getting better (he's been on Adderall for
10 months now). Once he's asleep he can usually stay asleep - it's the
getting up in the morning that's the problem.

OK here's my question. I have a 7y.o. ADHD on Aderall XR and when I looked up melatonin for him to sleep at night (yes we too are up at all hours of the night)on WebMD it was suggested that it not be taken if taking the drug family that Aderall belongs to. ( I do not reacall the drug family name off the top of my head.) We recently switched primary care and she sugest that I wait until his next med checkbefore we discuss his sleeping problems (now 2 months away) because it was only happening for 1/12 to 2 week period at a time for 3 months. We are now into our 4th month and my poor son is actually going into his 4th week of terrible sleep. He is lucky if he gets 3-4 hours a night. Please help we have tried everything from longer shower time, brushing to relaxing music to sleep and yess darkening his room. Nothing seems to be helping and I really don't thik he can wait for 2 months.
jude takes some in the middle of the night if he wakes up and we were told not after 3 o clock.after that he could be drowsy during the day
Melatonin can be found just about anywhere where there is a vitamin aisle. Drug stores, Wal-mart, Target, etc.My DD takes the melatonin about a half hour before bedtime & gets up bright & alert in the morning. Shes usually the 1st one up!
Yes, you can buy melatonin in any drug store.
Checked with the doctor today. He actually recomended melatonin. He said I could try 1mg, but usually 3mg works the best, the least side effects. I hope it works. My 10 year old son takes 3 mg of melatonin and it works wonderfully! I also heard there is timed release melatonin for those children that wake up in the middle of the night.Does Melatonin make them tired in the mornings? I have a hard enough time waking her up would it be made worse is my question before asking the doctor. Also where to buy Melatonin?I recommend checking with a doctor before giving your child any substance, even if it's natural. Natural doesn't mean harmless. We have used melatonin here for a few years now (off and on). It works great and usually within 1/2 hour. My DD is 12. She takes 3mg melatonin on nights she cannot fall asleep. Shes old enough to know if she needs it or not so I let her tell me. Some nights shes fine without it, other nights she takes 1. It takes her about 45 minutes after taking it to be ready to sleep & she sleeps straight through until morning.
I agree its important to check with your childs doctor first, as even natural supplements can interact with other meds, foods, etc. If nothing else, its at least important to have it on your childs records at his/her Dr every substance they are taking.
I need to inquire about this myself for my girl gets put to bed by 9 pm and is still up at 11pm most nights but not all the time.My 7 year old son, has been on concerta for 2 weeks now. The first night, he never slept, but as the week wore on it got better. I gave him the weekend off, and now, this week, he can't fall asleep. He was up last night until after 11:30 when I finally crashed. I heard alot of people talk about melatonin. Is it safe, and how much do you give? Any other ideas? Donna
my son is 4 and could not sleep ,he is not on meds.
melatonin is d dietary supplement so it is safe.
we give him 3 mg at 8 o'clock,he falls asleep 20 mns or so after, sometimes he wakes up again around 2 so we give him another 1 mg and that is him until about 7.(the dose was approved by our child psychologist)
we do not give it to him weekends and holidays.
nowadays he is up around 5 because of the early light, still it is better than what it was.
we were also suggested homeopathic remedy called passiflora comp
