The only thing is once you apply for SSI benefits you are in a sense labling your son for life there are pros and cons to it. What you do need is lots and lots of documentation and yes doctors are weary of this at times. Psychologists documentation is best or psychaitry. Is his disability affecting his life severly like does he have trouble functioning? Can there be any improvement in the future? SSI also goes by income levels so if they feel you earn enough you will definetly be denied. SSI likes to deny all you just have to appeal and get an attourney and that takes 1 1/2 years and if you win they give you back pay from the time you first applied.
I am a social worker and did the paperwork and fought for clients many of times. My one consumer had mental retardation and had to fight tooth and nail to win her case. For her she worked part time but could never handle full time. Good luck Jill
I live in Ontario, Canada so it may be a bit different here. Apparently they deny adults the first time. I am not sure about children. I am applying for ODSP for him. He was tested by a board certified psycologist. His pediatrician has the results.
I am not sure if he will improve. Since he's mentally disabled, I doubt it. Trust me I don't earn too much. I am going to try anyhow.
