Does Ritalin cause "dopeyness"? | ADHD Information

Share

Hi. My son was on Equasym, which is a brand name for methylphenidate and then went onto concerta for his ADHD..  He was on these for a total of about 3 months and it made him considerably quieter and quite subdued.  It was almost as if the med took his sparkle away.  I ended up taking him off the med because it suppressed his appetite too much and he was losing weight (he's already very thin!).  He also started to become quite fixated on things but that could of been his ASD symptoms coming to the fore.

Hope this helps you

My son is on ritlain he has 10 mg in the morning and another 10mg  at lunch. At the start it made him a little dopey but the doc just told me that was there body getting used to it. Maybe ask the doc they might give him a different med

Hi,

My 5 year old child has been on Ritalin 10 for about a month.

We haven't really noticed huge improvements, but then we give him the tablet just before school in the morning and by the afternoon, it has worn off.  So we don't see any effects.

Apparently he's a bit dopey at school.   We gave him Ritalin EARLIER in the morning to see if it takes a while to kick in.

It seems to... and he did seem "dopey" and quiet when it kicks in.

Is this normal and has anyone else had this experience?

We're going to reduce the dosage, but we were just wondering if some people have different effects under ritalin.

Thanks.

That "dopey" look that is often picked on by anti-med people "call them zombies" is the initial kicking in of the meds.  While it seems they are lethargic and overly calm it is actually focus and control.  It does become less noticable after a while on the meds as well.although usually without my adderall im tired and useless but when i was younger and forgot to take my ritalin before i went to school I always got in trouble.

sometimes i feel if i lose some of my emotions while i'm on adderall. i feel like a zombie at times and people say i'm not the old fun loving jerry anymore. oh well, screw 'em!!

well better dopey than loud and disruptive (thats how I think of myself on meds)
