Caffeine absorbs Amphetamines? | ADHD Information

Share
Prior to retrieving my first prescription, my doctor advised me not to eat
anything acidic within an hour of taking my meds (methylphenidate)...
I've heard that Milk is acidic (when it is digested).
Having lots of latte in your coffee?Man! I looked at the link that Basilica posted... what can I drink??? Not coffee, not distilled or filtered water, not hard water, milk... What about tea? Anyone know? No worries!
Remember, it is only advised that ya stay away from acidic foods within
one hour of taking the medication.

Doesn't mean you can't enjoy the foods you love!

I looooooove breakfast. I can eat breakfast all the time and I sure am
NOT going to stop! Hehehe! I still enjoy my tea daily, my occasional
macchiatos - and I never hold back on my wheat products!

So far, nothing really has hindered my meds. I avoid the acidic stuff
around pill-popping time.
This may be of interest to you.

It lists Coffee as an Acidic food - which may counteract your meds.

Soft drinks are also very acidic...

Are you drinking soda or coffee? It may be a relationship with your meds
and acidity - rather than with caffeine.

This is a good thread b/c

I've wondered about the effectiveness of my drugs wearing off too,

and i've been waiting and fearing that..i get headaches, i'm still much more capable of sustained focus (spent four hours on my essay for class the other night, what a feat) but i'm definitely dragging arse physically..its like being hungover all the time, i hate that.

i cannot even contemplate giving up on my wellbutrin though b/c otherwise i would slip into severe deppression, its had very positive effects

HOWEVER...i reviewed that list of 'acidic' and 'very acidic' foods and the main question i have is this:

they specify that although some foods are simply acidic upfront, they actually alkanize urine, and obviously the other foods acidify once ingested. what should i actually avoid then? the very acidic icludes very common breakfast foods which really complicates matters , i don't drink oj or coffee b/c of the interaction and i dont' want to be ill off of caffeine (caffeine now makes me ill whereas before my meds it made me HIGH) but whole grain bread and oatmeal? no buttermilk pancakes or biscuits? no oj was already bad enough and i actually crave for fruit like tangelos in the morning which is definitely a no no...meat? beans? so no to: a really fine breakfast burrito w/ black beans..or bacon, or pancakes, or oj, or yogurt blah blah

for breakfast.

i know its a little things

but don't they say that the little things are the things

that count?

this sucks..

I seem to build a tolerance quickly to my Adderall. It concerns me for many reasons. Do you guys know much about the relationship between amphetamines & caffeine?

Hi,

Never heard about caffeine absorbing stimulants, but have heard about another common drink ... orange juice (and other citric acid containing foodstuffs) reducing the body's uptake of the active components in adderall.

You'll find loads of info on this on the net......e.g.

"Stimulants (all of the above) should not be taken within one hour of citric acid products. Orange Juice is the obvious thing to avoid. But anything wrapped in foil (pop tarts) may have citric acid as a preservitive."

ksgcsg- I would suggest taking your meds on an empty stomach.
Nothing but water an hour before and after.

I understand that 'coffee in the morning' feeling that you must have. :)
As soon as I wake up, I take my med and then get ready for the day. By
the time I am done, an hour has passed and I sometimes treat myself to a
large cup of joe while I drive to work or school.

Moderation... :) That's they key! Even without the meds - it's generally
good for your overall health to not drink so much soda and coffee.

If you're really thirsty, why not keep a large bottle of water with you?
When I drink soda I get even more thirsty... My 32 oz. bottle of water is
always in my possession.

An idea:

Do you think that eating something that is high-alkaline would then
balance out anything that is acidic in your system?
Like, if you were going to drink a large cup of coffee in the morning -
would eating a banana balance it?

Basilica- I'm not as worried about food as I am what I can drink. I LOVE (and need) my morning coffee and Adderall makes me thirsty- I drink a lot of diet coke... They are pretty acidic, right?

Or, are you saying that I shouldn't take my medicine within one hour of eating or drinking anything acidic?

If it is working for you there is no problem with your morning coffee. I don't believe that report anyway - always look for balance and you will never get tricked. There was no balance. if you distill it down to basics it says pretty much all food and water should be avoided, "rigghht."  it's on some individuals home page, I have not seen any medical figures expose this. It's mainly juice that is a problem.

Have you ever taking an Ambian right after you got home from a big dinner? It didn't work because the contents of your stomach absorbed too much medicine. So if there is too much acid in your urinary track it will absorb your medicine. For this reason we avoid things like orange juice, Vitamin C - but only at the times our meds are working.

I know milk counter-acts the benefits of iron tablets - perhaps this is correlation also with the amphetamine. Rae7038251.1204050926shinsetu- It's not working. That's the problem... I drink a lot of diet coke& a giant cup of coffee in the morning. I don't drink any juice in the morning and haven't been taking any vitamin C. That sucks. Maybe its not the acidity, but have you tried to take the
Adderall in the morning BEFORE anything else?
I guess you could experiment by refraining from coffee just for a day or
two while taking your meds. If the effect is the same, then you can strike
coffee off your list as an interference.
What has your doc told you about this?Basilica- I finished my coffee a little over and hour before I took my meds to see if my Adderall would work... it still didn't work... I don't think the acidity is my problem... I wonder what is??
