Diff. between ASD/ADHD social probs | ADHD Information

Associated Difficulties: Asperger’s Disorder may be associated with learning difficulties and attention deficit disorder. Indeed, many children and adolescents with Asperger’s have previously been diagnosed with AD/HD instead of Asperger’s. Individuals with AD/HD may have difficulty with social interaction, but the primary difficulties are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. In individuals with Asperger’s, the social awkwardness is a greater concern. As individuals with Asperger’s enter adolescence, they become acutely aware of their differences. This may lead to depression and anxiety. The depression, if not treated, may persist into adulthood. It really IS important to know the difference between ADHD social problems and Aspergers because Aspergers is probably the diagnosis most often mistaken for ADHD (bipolar is probably second most commonly misdiagnosed as ADHD). Aspergers kids almost always have an ADHD dx. first due to social issues, but their issues are very severe and, without intervention, (and sometimes even with) can least a lifetime.

Yes this is the key difference even though our ADHD kids may have some social interaction issues it is not the primary issue.

Yesterday my ds caught himself saying somthing impulsive.  He had just met a new kid who was his same grade but very big.  I could tell that he was about to say you are so big but he stopped himsef before he blurted it out.  I think he realized that this might hurt the other child's feelings.  This give hope that these little guys are starting to get /pay attention to some of the social rules.

joemom38896.2029050926OH, joesmom, even my TYPICAL kids have to be watched around people who they feel are "different." They know better, but sometimes they'll whisper (ahem, I use whisper loosely) "Mom, look at how fat..." Lucas is pretty good these days. He used to blurt, but now he'll pull my arm and make me come close and whisper it. That's progress!!! bumpbump
