First of all, the parent is ignorant. Ritalin wears off.
Hmmm, the peak performance of Ritalin does decrease over time, but if meds are taken continuosly throughout the day, there is still a residual effect in the brain. Before I suggested someone was ignorant, I would like more clarification about what the parent was commenting on.
A perent at my sons school, said if a child is adhd & takes ritalin it should never wear off, if it does, the child isnt adhd.
While we're on the subject: there are too many parents who remain in denial in spite of the evidence right under their noses. For some unknown reason, some parents prefer to stick to one "label" of choice.
I did'nt want to "stick" a label on my son, but i had to find out if he was acting up, or really something wrong with him, as i did'nt want to disapline him in the way i disapline my other children as he was'nt coping with it. I do smack my children, NOT very often, once in a blue moon, ok, but i did'nt want too & so i dont so often now, & my adhd son does'ny cope with me smacking him, so now i know that he has adhd, & may have asburgurs, i can deal with it differently, I have done alot of reading up on adhd & the autism spectrum & are learning all the time just as he is.

We are all getting along better now that we know, & continually finding ways to deal with things.mikmum----pm me anytime, maybe ur son acts like my daughter.....she is mild aspergers!Ok, i will thanx.ur welx...I dont anyway, thanx

Mikmum,

Definitely check out the website MomWI recommended. You may want to post something there about discipline because you definitely cannot discipline an Aspie kid the same way you do another child. Good luck!

Imac, I've never known a teacher to get that one right. At any rate, it's a moot point. They can't diagnose. I'd take it to professionals. Many kids with Aspergers have trouble in school with teachers/school professionals even believing anything is wrong because they are too intelligent and often excellent students. I've known many parents who went through this. They are seen more as "oddballs." Imac, it could be different in Canada too. Here, our classes are big, and teachers rarely pick up much more than "something's wrong." They mean well, but they don't know what "it" is. I'm close to our special ed teacher since she had both my son and now my daughter, and she swears nobody knew Lucas was autistic. In fact, she'd never heard of PDD-NOS before I told her what it was. Aspergers is also a relatively new diagnosis and I'm sure some still don't know about it. There is a budding school of thought that ADHD may be on the Spectrum. We'll see where that goes. There are similiarities.

When my son was on Ritalin (he was for a year), we were told it's in/out fast. It didn't really affect my son in a bad or good way so it's hard for me to say, but we were not told there was a residual affect. So I was told something else (shrug). Either way, it doesn't last longterm. Concerta is long acting Ritalin. We did that one too.

I wouldn't ever trust a teacher to diagnose a disorder, no matter how much exposure. No teacher ever got Lucas right and he's been in Special Ed. They had no idea what he had other than learning disabilities. I'd do the NeuroPsych and let the professional trained to diagnose do the diagnosing.

I recommend posting on the PDD/Autism board about your concerns. Aspergers can be differentiated from ADHD by SEVERE social cluelessness, obsessions, and normally coming across as an "oddball geek." It is not uncommon for an obsession to be computers. Here you go.

MomWI38896.5075231481BINGO Mom,,,my daughter they said just " needed to apply herself", come to find out she has an auditory learning disability. She finally got diagnosed at 15.My son is diagnoised with adhd by pediatrition, teachers think he has asburgurs, a perent told me that if he was on ritalin (which he has been) & it does'nt continually work(which it did'nt) then he does'nt have adhd? he is not on ritalin now as he has'nt for some time, we have other ways of doing things, just dont know if any one has heard of this??yes, i will keep going, thats all i can do, doc app comming up, so i will stress my concerns. thanxFirst of all, the parent is ignorant. Ritalin wears off. Why do you think he has Aspergers? Do you know what it is? Would you like information?I would find a good neuro psych, and have them do a full evaluation. Teachers are not doctors..IMac38944.8725MOMWI: I dont know what to think any more all i know he that he has somthing wrong with him, doctors are ignorant too they dont liston to me, & im his mother, they spent all of 5 mins with him & had there diagnioses!,

BHJ1234:Yeah, teachers can only do so much but the teachers that mikey has are from the EBD unit & have worked with these type of children & what sorts of work they prouduce, his year1 teacher worked with asburgures children for nearly 20 years so she has plenty of experience.
Im not sticking up for the teachers, just listoning to them & accepting there views.
Knowledgeable teachers can recognize the differences in Asperger Syndrome and ADHD because they work with them. A doctor with little experience with high functioning Autism or Asperger Syndrome could easily diagnose ADHD.

THANK-YOUBottom line you still need a diagnosis,,,so a neuro psych is still the route to goImac, nope, not interested. I believe you. I just wasn't told that. Doesn't mean I was given the right information.
